Ok, I have come up with a couple of gage layout that fit the original Instrument Panel. I would like input of which looks best, top or bottom?
The Top is the more traditional. Where the bottom aligns the gages up on the bottom edge. The Speedo and Tach is 3 3/8" OD, where the smaller gages are 2 1/4".
And what finish on the wood, Gloss, Simi-Gloss or Satin. The steering wheel is a Grant 3 spoke Magohany (glossy). Door Panels will match. Black Walnut Arm Rests.
The top one looks the best but the bottom one may be easier to see the gauges. When I drive my truck with the stock gauges, I have to look around the bottom of the dash pad to see 'em. Frustrating sometimes! Also, go with gloss to match the wheel.
Be different and break with tradition. Use the bottom one. Glossy finish on the wood trim always looks better IMHO. Makes the grain of the wood catch the eye and focus on the detail.
I think you will like the Mahogany when it's finished. Wood is prettier than metal inside. Billet and SS is for under the hood and can be purchased, I did not like the look.
19704, I have had the same problem with my dash pad (broken down) covering part of my gages. (I may end up making my own dash pad and cover it with leather. I have a sewing machine for leather and can buy whole sale.) I know the center will work, I also needs to see if the angle of steering wheel spokes will block any view.
Vanwho, I have been thinking alone that line. I am very picky when it comes for detail. I do not take shortcuts. Most of the time I take the long route too.
I have enough mahogany to make both (actually 3). Then I can see which works out the best. I may also play with moving them closer together, currently 3/4" apart. Then I may have room to add 2 more gages. The 67-72 dash is long (22" workable) and narrow, 4" (tall) work area doesn't leave many options. I would like to see if I can have the small gages staggered stepped. That way the gages would be in a more compact space. Similar to a 56 dash. I may end up with 4 different ones before it's all done.
