You wont believe this, happy day!

Today I bought 3 Y crankshafts, plus one and a half 4100 Autolite carbs for $40. The best news: One of the cranks is a 312!

Holy cats! Are any of the other cranks steel? That's a heck of a deal. The carb alone is worth $40. The 312 crank is worth twice that.

Steel, hadnt even thought of that, being so worked up on the 312. Will check it out!
I have looked around for an affordable 312 crank for 2 or 3 years, and basically gave it up. Then today after turning down a 64 4X4, the guy asked me if I would be interested in a crank. I asked how much. $20. He brought out 3. After iding the 312 while being unusually calm, I said well I guess I can gamble on that for $20. The response was $40 for all three. Oh, OK. Carb(s) was thrown in as I packed up.

Congrats. I got very lucky two times with Y-block parts buys. First one I spent $500 including renting a truck to drive 20 hours round trip to pickup a full truck bed full of parts including a complete engine and tranny (239Y with 3speed - Almost couldn't give it away for free). By the time I sold off everything I didn't want I had about $2k in cash plus the 3-duece setup with linkage (later sold for about $600). The other haul I still have, 63 truck block with forged crank and double geared timing chain plus ecz-g heads that I have already had tanked and checked by a machine shop as good. $100 in that lot and will keep until I have time and funds to rebuild and put in another early 60's f100.

Lucky for sure. But you also worked pretty hard for that bed full of parts. Most of us, myself included, would probably have thought it was too far out of reach.

I'm learning that if you're patient, you can score y-block parts for a reasonable price. I bid on a '292' on ePay because it was in my home town. I got a 312 with ECZ-G heads with an 11" clutch pack for something like $250.

Some people want a lot of money for what turns out to be common parts.

Paul you are right. The man with the 64 very well may end up contacting me and saying come pull the motor. It has G or 113s. I would do that, but didnt want to borrow a truck to pull a rented trailer to and from the Crater Lake area.

Yeah, I was 20 and wanted a 3-duece setup so bad for my 61. Now, 10 years later, I probably wouldn't go after it either. I'm sure glad I did, paid for half a year of college with the money I made.

cranks

Checked the two 292 crankshafts and didnt find the pot of gold. No steel crank. However after cleaning off the dried grease on one of the 292s, it is a nice 0/10 piece, although I always figure a used unit needs to be ground. Still havent cleaned up the other to see what it measures. If anyone needs a good crankshaft cheap let me know.
The 312 crank is due to be picked up from the crank grinder Monday. To have the main bearing races turned to 292 size made the expense significant. They are going to charge for two grinds, which will bring the final charge to something like $225 minimum. However that is inexpensive when looking at the cost of a 317 cu in stroker kit for a 292. The motor the crank will end up in should be all setup now for a drop in of the 312, and final displacement will be 317. However the only heads available are 1964 peanut valves. OH WELL . The real problem, and expense, with the new 317 is that I dont have a vehicle to put it into. A semi ratty 1955 Ford Club Coupe would be nice .
