Okay,
I have an '88 F250 XLT Lariat 7.3IDI 4sp w/OD and a Banks Sidewinder Kit. The exhaust from the turbo back is 3" with the muffler that comes with Banks kit. I really think it's too quiet. I hear the turbo and the ram-air more than the exhaust note. So, I thought about having the muffler replaced with a straight pipe and replace the exhaust tip with one that has a resonator in it. I figure between the resonated tip and the turbo, it will be louder than the banks muffler but with all that pipe going out the side behind the rear tire, should be bearable. Any thoughts?
Don't know how the resonator will do, but my truck is 3" strait piped from the turbo to behind the rear tire.
Its not as loud as you might think, but the noise level does compete with the sound of the turbo, in the cab.
With the passenger window rolled down, the truck sounds like a bigblock gasser untill the turbo spools, and then it sonds like an old freightliner. I listen to that when theres nothing good on the radio .
At freeway speeds, there is a bit of a drone that can be tiring on longer trips, but overall, its about as loud as before the turbo was put in, back when it DID have a muffler. Although if I leave it in overdrive, the engine is very hard to hear (~1650rpm @70mph).
my 88 has a flowmaster 50 series between the down pipe and the splitter for the stacks. not to loud, but not to quiet.
before, with no muffler, you could hear it from a mile away. now you don't start to hear it till i am around 1/4 mile away.
Ahh yes, mine is noisy if I were to "stomp" it around the neighborhood, which is the real porpose of a muffler it wound seem. But I built my truck for the freeway, so thats not a biggy for me.
I thank you for your replies, I like the sound I have with the Banks system, and from all I can tell it's a Dynomax Ultra-Flo muffler, just like the one sold in Summit and Jeg's for 99-04 Powerstrokes, but I still want to hear more of an exhaust note, especially since I have a manual transmission. I'll probably try the straight pipe first and see how I like it, then if it's too loud I'll put a Flowmaster on it. I called Flowmaster and they recommended two different mufflers, a new 30 Series delta-flow or an outlaw series muffler. The 30 series has a more chambered tone, the outlaw series a little more straight pipe sounding. I'll let you know what I come up with.
