1999 F350 - When I turn the ignition to the ON/RUN postion the engine cranks over. The stater stays runnning until the tranmission is shifted in the reverse or drive position. I have replaced the iginition switch and start soleniod but still have the same problem. Any ideas?
To be clear, I don't have any diesel experience, but I don't see any reason to eliminate the ignition switch on an 8 yr old vehicle... The starter relay could just be doing what its told...
Check the ignition switch down in the steering column. If the starter stops when you put it in gear then it's not a starter problem. The switch is stuck or a piece is broken in there making contact to the starter circuit. Also there may be a secondary seloniod mounted on the inner fender that could be stuck.
Okay when I replaced the ignition switch below the steering colum I left it off of the steering colum to test out the new ignition switch. I replaced the ignition switch twice just in case I got a bad one the first time. I also replaced the secondary solenoid mounted on the inner fender passengerside. There has never been a remote starter installed in this truck. Is there another starter relay between the ignition switch and the solenoid mounted on the inner fender passengerside? Any other idea?
I just checked the EVTM for my 2001, and it doesn't show any other relays.
For the 2001, fuse 20 in the central junction box (should be near the master cylinder) powers the starter relay. Pull that fuse (check the owner's manual to be sure that's the one) and see if it still cranks when you turn the ignition to ON.
If it does, there's a short/crossed-wire after the fuse (we'll work on that later). If not, it's upstream of that fuse, either the ignition switch (not likely if you changed it twice already) is bad, or the RD/LB wire from the igition switch to the fuse is shorted to +12V (again, very strange).
If pulling the fuse doesn't stop it, the relay is getting juice from after the fuse. Matter of fact, try pulling the fuse, and if it still does it, pull the relay (the small wire going to the relay/solenoid on the fender), and check again. If it still does it with the relay out, all I can say is wow
If the fuse doesn't stop it, we'll work more on it, and I'll give you more wire colors to check.
Okay I have pulled the fuse and I can still crank the enigine when the ignition is turned on. The Red & Blue wire coming from the ignition switch is getting back fed (+12v) to the ignition switch. I have pulled the small wire from the starter solenoid on the fender then turn on the ignition and it does not crank. So somewhere I am getting power to the starter wire? What should the power reading on three terminals on the starter solenoid read with the ignition turn off and then on?
Try starting in neutral, if the problem goes away, then start looking closer at the wiring on the column. Sounds like you have some chaffed wires that are getting together when selector is in park. If the problem is still there while in neutral, then someone has crossed something up.
unhook the load side of the fender mounted selonoid(the wire that goes towards the starter). turn on the ignition and use a test light to see if there is power on that terminal. if there is power, then also unhook the little +12 v wire that controls the selonoid and hook test light to it.leave the light connected where you can see it from a distance and start pulling and replacing fuses one at a time till it goes out. there may be more than one fuse but it will help you narrow down what circuit is in conflict here. note: the secondary selonoid controls the starter mounted selonoid. Another test you can do is with the key OFF, hook +12v to the control wire of the secondary selonoid and see what else powers on. hope this helps.
Well I finally figured it out this afternoon after picking up a copy of Chilton's from a friend of mine. The problem was with the Transmission Range Sensor which is mounted on the side of the transmission with (2) screws. The TRS controls the starter so you can only start in park and neutral. It also controls your backup lights as well. Somehow the TRS was send power back through the starter wire to the starter solenoid. Once I replaced it my problems were gone. Thanks for all of you who gave me advise.
