A heavy duty 3 speed, floor shifter is a good trannie(2nd and 3rd are sycro). It should be the same size and mount as the 4 speed granny. The remote shifted 3 speed, light duty is a different size.

They also made lighjt duty three speeds with floor shifters. All light duty 3-speed were that way in 1948 and 1949. The columns shift did not show up in the trucks until midyear to late 1950. Some plants in fact may not have gone to the column shift until 1951.
By 51, I'm pretty certain all of the light duty 3-speeds were column shifts. Not sure about the heavy duty 3's.
The heavy duty 3 speeds to my knowledge were floor shifters, same as the 4 speeds. I would recommend the HD 3 speed particularly if you are going to work it hard or put more power thru it. After several transmission teardowns and parts replacements on the original light duty floor shifter in Willard, my 49, in the late 70's, I relaced it with a HD 3 speed. End of problem! Back then Willard ran a 56 Buick nailhead and I was younger. More power than that flathead tranny wanted. Note that Willard was already on the dark side in 1962 when the PO bought it in San Jose.
Edit:
As I remember it was syncro in 2nd and 3rd however it had spur cut rather than helical in at least 1st gear.

To use the HD 3-sp, don't you have to use the HD crossmember that mounts further rearward? (in a Bonus Built) I didn't think it is a straight bolt-in.
I do not remember having to change anything significant like the trans mount or driveshaft however I did the change out almost 30 years ago! Perhaps Number Dummy can tell us.
