I just completed a 1200 mile trip w/F150 Supercab, carrying a
garden tractor. Running 70, no air, I got 21-22. On the second
leg I ran 75-85 empty, and got 18 +/-. Around town my mileage,
at 2,600 ft. altitude is from 15-16 depending on how many open
highway short runs. The sticker claim is 16 town, 21 highway. I
think this is about what they get, too..
I have a 2002 Ford XLT Extended Cab short bed with the 4.2 V6. I have 3000 miles on it. I have been tracking the mileage since the day I got it. The mileage goes anywhere between 15-17. The sticker on the car when I got it said that it is rated at 15 and 17. A lot of folks here are always asking why they dont get better mileages. I dont think that anyone should expect better mileage than the factory posts on the truck. If you want better than that then another vehicle should be bought. I havent had it on a trip yet so my 15-17 mpg is strictly based on driving about 20 miles a day in mixed driving conditions.
I didnt know they made the 2002 with a 4.2......
I just bought a 2002 ranger xlt 4X4 and i saw as avail
a 3.0liter and a SOHC 4.0liter(mine)
oh and the truck has 260 miles on it now but i seem to be getting about sticker... which was 15-18 city/highway... because its a 4X4
the 4X2 was like 17/21 or so

yes i expect the gas mileage to go up slightly as it breaks in
I think the main reason these trucks are hard on gas is because of the large tires. My truck has 245 75r16s on it, she aint no rocket either, if it wasnt for overdrive I could never keep up with traffic, my truck is just plain dead, I use all high octane gas and still lazy, k&n filtercharger, still lazy. It has a 3.55 rear end, still lazy, what gives?
Hey!
I'm not alone!
I have been having the same mileage problem with my '97 4.2 V6 w 5spd. No matter how I drive, long freeway or around town 13.5 -14 mpg.
I just don't get how some people are getting up to 18-20 mpg!?
Are they pulling my leg? Or a re there some fundamental differences in the trucks? I'm in So. California
I'm going to look into two recommendations.
But I'm not sure how.
1) check the speedo accuracy
2) see if the running temp is correct
Below is another site I have been on that has a lot of good suggestions and one reader recommended this site as well.
You call the I-6 a big engine? It is the same displacement of the POS ford v6 they foolishly put into a full size truck. And, FYI - the 317ci, 5.3L v8 in the chevys are rated at 19 hwy and 285 hp. Ford Idiots.
ignore "fordh8r"'s comments and lets get on with this discussion.
first i want to say i'm happy with my mileage and my tailpipe is squeaky clean (connection?)
i just read all the way through this thread and still have no idea why people's mileages vary so widely. keep responding and we'll eventually figure this out.
one thought- people who've had the 4.6 die said that gas mileage went down several months beforehand. could the 4.2s with bad mileage be on their way out??
I have a 2003 F-150 XL 4x4 regular cab, short bed Sport with the 4.2, 5spd, 3.55's, 255/70-16's, and 5000 miles on the odometer so far. To echo a common refrain: I love the truck, except for the terrible mileage.
The power of the 4.2 is well-matched to the weight and gearing of the truck, but the mileage is atrocious. The window sticker says 16 city/20 hwy. The weekend I bought the truck I got 20.5 mpg on one 230 mile leg of a highway trip. Since then I consistently get 11.5 city and 16.5 hwy. Granted, my city driving is short trip with lots of stop signs, but 11.5 is so far worse than the sticker that something has to be wrong. Part of it could be that I don't short-shift like some other manual drivers I've seen, but the difference shouldn't be enough to get 25% worse than the EPA figures. Even on the highway I ought to do better than 16.5. I don't have cruise control, but I maintain a consistent 70-75 mph on the long stretches. Either the sticker mileage is a flat lie, or something else is going on.
The 4.2 mileage is barely better than my (1000lb heavier) 1992 5.0 Bronco with the E40D and 3.55's. I recently recalibrated the Bronco speedometer for 31" tires (thanks to a cool post on this site), and I haven't run a full-tank mileage test yet. Before the recal I was calculating 14.5-15 hwy (although to make a long story short, I got 16.5-17 after I installed a Jacobs ignition, even running 70-75 on the hwy with the A/C blasting and a small apartment's worth of stuff in the back; for some (probably computer-related) reason that returned to 14.5-15 after switching from POS 30" Pep Boys specials to 31" BFG AT's).
Something ain't right with the 4.2. Perhaps its time to start getting my money's worth out of the lame 36/36000 warranty, and make the local Ford dealer take a gander at it.
