Drained the rear axle/diff oil and installed a MagHytec Cover. My truck has about 30k miles and the lube that I drained out looked very dark...like it had moly in it. Put StaLube 75w-140 Synthetic along with StaLube Equatorque friction modifier in and I am wondering if there is a EP additive I should put in also. Thanks in advance!
Most if not all good diff lubes have an EP additive if I recall. I think it is what makes the fluid stink.
If the bottle says it meets Ford spec yadda yadda and that is what your manual calls for, then you are set. Otherwise it will be something like a GL 3 or 4 which works for most diffs.
When I have drained diff lube at normal intervals it is usually dark honey color but can go to black if the change interval is long. I do not know for sure what moly would look like in a diff lube, but would GUESS it is either black or kind of silvery black. But diff fluid with a lot of fine metal shavings can look that way too.
Your truck has few enough miles that I would doubt there is any significant wear, and the factory fluid is a syn which I would guess might look like what you got. Most fluids I have seen are honey color when new.
Check the manual for what is required and use that.
Thanks for the reply...the lube and friction modifier I used does meet the Ford specs...I just thought that there might be a moly ep additive to use also. Like I said...the stuff that I drained was sure dark and I thought it might have something in it from the factory. There were actually very little metal shavings on the magnetic fill plug, leading me to think that it was not metal in the lube giving it a dark color. The synthetic lube had a very light amber color.
