I am looking for ways to increase the fuel mileage on my 2002 F150 S/Crew with a 5.4. I know the usual tricks, flowmaster muffler and K&N, but is there anything you all have tried that works? Does the flowmaster muffler or K&N air filter really make a difference? I am looking for someone with proven facts, the companies figures usually don't come close.
Probably the reason for the quiet is there are no easy short cuts to mileage. A chip will do it but you end up having to run premium so the mileage issue with it is moot. Intakes, well, you're engine keeps the same air/fuel ratio due to the mass air flow so your mpg will generally stay level although you might get a little more pickup.
2002 SCREW, 5.4 , K&N, Gibson Super Truck System,5500 total miles, engine still tight, 17 city, 22 highway 70-75 mph.15 mpg pulling 30 ft rv 5500 lbs.Note: I always pull locked out of overdrive.( struggled with pulling this trailer), K&N was first mod and made a small difference, Gibson made a terrific difference in pulling and milage. Caution (loud), with the Gibson it just plays with the trailer even in mountains. Don't discount the Gibson just because every Joe Blow likes Powerflow. Only downside to Gibson they do not make stainless in this system but the tips are stainless, system is cheap enough where you can afford to replace in a few years. rk
