I am trying to find the differences between the Pioneer AVIC-D1/D2/D3, but I can't really find a website to list them. Can anyone post the differences between them?
I don't have specifics but I have a similar Pioneer unit (AVIC-N1). More often than not, the updated units are renamed in sequence. So the N1 is the old school version of the N3 (same with D1/D3). I would imagine the D3 has upgraded map data and firmware info. Like I said, I don't have specifics but you might be able to find some more info at http://www.avic411.com.
I just finished FINALLY installing my AVIC-D3 last night. Haven't had enough time to play with it yet...but so far worth the money. I also found it for $640 vs. the $1000 asking price like everyone else. Shipped to my door overnight from NYC to AK for $80. Worth it too, since I paid so little for it.

I'll let you know now, that I head to shave down the dash to make it fit, but no kidding Pioneer JUST released the new AVIC-N4 http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069681_376998238,00.html which shouldn't require any shaving down, and of course is a better system. I wish I would have waited, but I'm not gonna shed tears over it. It's of course more expensive, but you get what you pay for when it comes to Pioneer.
I also shaved my dash opening to get the Kenwood in. Back in 2001 when I bought my kenwood in dash/navigation combo I paid about $1400. This all in one unit is a lot less to deal with and looks a lot cleaner.
I'd rather have a D3 vs. the N4 as I don't really like the flip out versions. That's just begging to get broken.
I have the D3 with the ipod adapter, backup cams, and steering wheel interface, I love it , the ipod controls are excellent, I have my entire cd collection and a couple of movies on it so I very seldom even listen to the radio.
I think the navigation works great and the D3 has so many features that it takes awhile to learn everything it can do.
Here's a pic of mine in an 05 superduty (no trimming required). On the 99-04 superduties minor trimming is required.
I don't have pics of my install, but I can tell you where I intalled the GPS Antenna, and my Bluetooth Adapter. The systems antenna comes with a square (2"x2" or so)metal pad that's sticky on one side. I just stuck it under the dash on top of the right vent going through the dash, and put the antenna on that. Antenna is magnetic, that's why the square is metal. Anyway...if I would have thought about it, I would have put it on the left vent only because the plug goes into the back left side of the deck, and it would have made it a little easier for wire routing. I get great reception with no problems. Then antenna works fine as long as there's not metal above it, so the plastic dash is no problem at all. I put it under the dash for security sake, and no one will know it's a GPS system unless of course they've actually researched them. As far as the Bluetooth deal...sort of a pain, only because the box is about 5"x3", and sort of hard to figure out where to put it. I didn't want to put it in the dash, because the only mounting stuff you get with it are sticky velcro pieces. Not the greatest thing, because the box has a little bit of weight that if not mounted on a flat surface could potentially fall if the velcro wears out or something. Anyway...I ended up putting the bluetooth box under the driver side visor, and routed my wires down inside the pilar, which works for me. I can still put the visor down, and with the elastic bands on the visor it's held in place pretty good. Of course the microphone is just attached the the visor right above my head. The sound, at least according to who I talk to, they say sounds as though I'm talking directly into the phone. I was going to buy the satellite radio option, but up here in Alaska we don't get the reception...at least not in the Anchorage area. Not too mention the FCC hasn't approved it up here either. I don't have an IPOD, so I can't really say anything about that. I really like the system. I've only had it for about 2 weeks, and keep playing more and more with it, but overall it's a pretty good system. My only real pain was finding the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) wire, but once I found it, it was a breeze. Anyway...hope this helps without the visual. Oh yeah...I also taped the crap out of my wires, because there are so many, it's hard to get them all back in there, and make sure they're out of the way of the cooling fan area on the back of the deck. Another thing I might get down the road will be a backup camera for it as well. Which from what I've heard is a real easy thing too. Just routing wires pretty much is it. Anyway...if there are any questions feel free to ask.
To add to the antenna location. I ran mine under the carpet and into the headliner. If you remove the 3rd brake light, you can gain access to the wiring route of the brake light. I ran both my satellite and nav antenna's out the brake light and up onto the roof (no interference whatsoever). I think I have a pic in my gallery somewhere....

I thought about this too, but 1: Good amount of work 2: The way I did it took about 30 seconds. Took longer taping the excess wire. 3: Didn't want to possibly get paint scratched 4: Out of site, out of mind--Security (Don't know I have GPS)
I do like your idea though, if I was wanting to put it outside of the truck. I get like 6 1/2 of the 7 antennas in orbit, so it's to each his own I guess.
On the D/3, did you find that the steering wheel interface works okay?
I was looking to get the D/3, with the IPOD connection, XM receiver/antenna, back up camera and steering wheel interface, but after hearing that some people had issues with the steering wheel controls I held off on pulling the trigger.
Also, it sounds like your installation went pretty easy. My truck is an 07, so it doesn't appear as though I will have any problems, at least with trimming the dash.
Any insight you can provide on these issues would be greatly appreciated.
