Fuel Delivery Problem

The other day I was driving my 89 f150 (Carbureted 302) and all of a sudden it just sputtered and died. I tried restarting it and it wouldnt fire. After about five minutes it started and ran fine for a few minutes but then the same thing happened. I mangaed to get it home and check the fuel pressure. It was at around 5.5-6 psi but would slowly drop to zero. I replaced the fuel filter right away. I thought it might be the high pressure fuel pump on the frame rail so I went ahead and replaced it. It still ran the same, so I thought It might be the filter screen in the tank. I dropped the tank and the screen was clear. (I replaced the in tank pump a few months ago) After all this I still cant seem to find the problem. Any suggestions? (I am using the stock high pressure fuel pump on the frame with a mallory fuel pressure regulator to get the pressure down for the carb.)

Thanks and sorry about the long post.

I have the pump hard wired to the solenoid with a toggle switch in the cab. What should the voltage to the pump be?

I tried loosening and removing the gas cap and it made no difference.

Hi,

I have a 89 F150 with a 302 also and mine is basically doing the same thing but only at an idle. After idling for 5 minutes it sputters and dies and won't stop till it cools down and I haven't been able to figure it out yet. On yours, two things you might want to check is the coolant temp sensor (not for the gauge but the one that tells the temp to the computer) and the second thing is the ignition module on the distributor. One other thing that might be happening is the distributor pick up coil might be bad but I really think it is one of the first two things I mentioned. I had a Bronco that did the exact same thing yours is doing and it was the coolant tempeture sensor.
Please Email me if you get it figured out at occh1@aol.com.

I just thought of one other thing that it might be and that is the throttle position sensor!

I appreiciate your help, but my truck is carbureted, so most of that doesn't apply. I also have a brand new pertronix distributor, coil, plugs, and wires, so I dont really think it's an ignition problem.
