Auxiliary Fuel Tank for the Excursion
Yeah baby. "Revolution? I'm eeen!!!"
New here... Great thread. I am SO down with this. Just back from bi-weekly Sat morning fuel run to Tecate. It's about a 40 minute drive one way but worth it since I have two diesels ('02 Excursion and a TDI VW).
Since April I've been paying about $2.16 gallon for diesel at Pemex station inside the border. That's $2.50 - $3/gallon savings today. I carry & fill extra 5 gallon jugs to help get through the week(s) -- to minimize number of trips south.
I'm told that technically they could bounce me back when crossing north with the fuel cans. Was a bit nervous today when Custom pulled me out for Secondary Inspection. Besides the jugs are tedious to fill and occasionally get messy inside Excursion.
I'd much rather just add an aux tank. The bigger the better as long as I don't mess w/ ground clearance too much.
Bottomline:
Between my tank and jugs I bought ~81 gallons this morning. Do that math!
I can pay for an aux tank pretty quick. Just this morning I saved over $200. That's over $400/month. A $1000 40 gal aux tank add-on pays off in at rate of ~$100 per fillup. With a fuel transfer option it might be worth it to pump out to drum storage and make a couple return trips sooner to build up a fuel -- hedge against price increases south of the border.
Gotta be careful though. The Feds have busted some guys locally who've gotten a little too entreprenuerial with Mexican diesel (buying down there and reselling up here -- not paying excise tax).

any update on anything here ?
I am still looking for a good tank.
I spoke with aerotanks last year and they didnt't seem interested even though they claim to "build custom tanks".
Ideally I would like a 60 gallon aux tank.

Options for an aux tank
If anyone is out there...
I bought a 22 and 40 gallon gas tank(s) from a Pull A Part. Rough calculations indicator that I will have a range of around 1,000 miles with the 40 gallon.
22 gallon is a prototype (as all first builds of anything are). Built a 1/2" plywood box for the 22 gallon. Plan to do similar for 40 gallon tank. Filler port is a marine one.
When used, they will sit in the back of my Ex, plumbed into the fuel system. Aux tank will be vented with a marine thru-the-hull vent. Each will have the internal fuel pump installed. Fuel transfer will be controlled by a switch on my dash. Fuel indication will be via a marine fuel gauge.
NOTE: My testing has shown that the OEM style fuel sender in the tank will not work with the marine gauge. So, plan to install a marine fuel sender.
Additionally, I intend to install baffles in each of the tanks.

So, has anyone gone anywhere with this? Looking to mount a tank between the driveshaft and frame. I would much rather get a tank from a pick and pull yard and plumb it in. What truck would I be looking for? 4 door short bed, 2 door long bed? Anyone know how many different tanks were available for these trucks in the mid 2000 year range? Maybe an E350? With diesel prices as much as 50 cents different between stations and towns I dont get why more people are not looking into more capacity?
Any update?
Just a heads up, that tank was originally desgined for our WVO system, obviously, and is not available yet on our site, so any pricing you see is for the WHOLE fuel system to run WVO. The savings there is that you get your waste oil for free or cheap. SO at .15 a gallon vs 5.00 a gallon the math is pretty easy as to how $3,000 pays for itself in short order. In short, the tank itself is not $3,000. We're proud, but not that proud. I think my partner may have accidently posted those pics up here instead of in the alternative fuels section. However, there is no reason why this wouldn't work just as a standalone auxillary tank. Plumb in a 6 port pollak valve like the dual tank OBS trucks, and you are set. In fact to take it a step further, it would be entirely possible to use a fuel level sender that has the same ohm range as the OEM so when you switch, your fuel level gage reads the tank you are using. If we were to do a setup like that, it would likely cost around $1,000
have you gotten any further with this? Your website isn’t working either.
Bitteroot Diesel has continued on the the WVO aspects along with their injector rebuilding for both 6.0 and 7.3 PSD. I am not sure if they still carry the Excuesion tanks but here is the link for their website. Would be best to contact them directly.
