A very wierd Problem!

Hello everyone,

1997 F150 4.6L V8 4x4 105k miles

My starter went dead about a week and a half ago. Had it replaced, but since I had it replaced Ive been having a wierd problem. Whenever I turn on the panel vents and then step on the gas to accelerate quickly the air stops coming out of the panel vents and starts coming out of the defroster vents for the front windshield???? This also seems to happen when the A/C is on. When I accelerate quickly the air just starts coming out of the Windshield vents instead of where it is set to. Then when stop accelerating the air flow starts to come out of the vent it should be coming out of.

Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Could it be related to having the starter changed out??

Thanks for the help,

Mike Krivsky

Sounds like a vacuum line was either disconnected or broken when the battery was unhooked, this line runs along the firewall behind the battery. It goes to the vacuum canister in the passenger side fenderwell.

Yep, you have a vacuum leak.. look for a cracked or disconnected hose... there is also a check valve that can go bad that will let the vacuum bleed down.

This makes sense, it sounds like there is an air leak somewhere. Will this hurt anything until I can get it fixed?

Not really. If the leak is too bad, it may throw a code and light the check engine light for a lean condition.
