when i drive every once in a while i get a coolant smell from the passenger side of my truck and a little on the drivers side. stromg enough to smell outside but not inside. this is not a smell that happens all the time. i have not noticed a lot of or any coolant loss on the ground or from the reservour. should i be worried or what? the truck has about 5 months left on waranty from the dealer. or is there some way i can check it without taking it to the dealer and paying an arm and a leg for it?

You could pressure test the system to see if there is a small leak. With no coolant on the ground, it could be "blowing steam" through a small hole that only really opens up when hot. Maybe a joint somewhere. Shouldn't be that expensive at a reputable independent mechanic. Or even a chain store type place that only does tune-up type stuff, if you trust guys like that...
But if it's under warranty and you got the time to deal with a dealer, I'd take it to him and have HIM do it under warranty. Just be ready for the popular, "I couldn't find a problem." statement.
Wiggit, there is a die they can put in the coolant system and after you run the engine for a while they shine a black light in the area of the smell and the die will glow like bright floresence, they do this with air condition systems also for hard to find leakage.
do you know where i can get this die? i saw what you are talking about in a magazine but do not know which one . also do you know how mush it costs?
i talked to ford where i bought my truck and they said they would check it for free but if something is rong i will half to pay the deductable first. i think 100$. hopefully it isn't something major. i really could not see myself driving my wifes tauras wagon around!!!!
