i have another question. i just baught a 01 ranger 4.0 4x4 and it sounds like tire nois when driving and the faster i go the louder it gets. i have tried puting the spare in and switching the tires but its still there. next thing is the odomiter doesnt work. what makes it work? a cable or gear? any help would be much apreciated.
If the speed-o is out, or maybe the auto tranny s acting up, or you have the ABS brake warning light on, or the cruise control is acting up, suspect the ABS speed sensor, located in the front top of the differential, as all those systems use it's output signal.
On the noise, does it sound like it's coming from the front, middle under the cab, or toward the rear????
What happens when you get it rolling & shift to "N" ?????
speedo works fine just the odomiter and trip meter dont work. no warning light on and cruise control work great. what make the odomiter and trip meter work? i have not tried shifting to n. will try and let you know.
OK. well if the speed-o & other things are working, then the ABS speed sensor is ok.
So it sounds like the problem is with the speed-o head & gearing. Try pushing the trip odometer reset button several times & see if you can wake it up & get it going.
The trip odometer reset button is spring loaded in the out position, so if it isn't this way, try gently puling it to the out position.
If all that comes to naught, then it's iikely time to remove the odometer & have a look-see inside.
When your doing the "N" drive train unload test, also do one with the vehicle in gear & just maintaining speed, but not accelerating, or decelerating, or loading the drive train & see what happens.
Did both these problems come about slowly, over time, or suddenly, after some event????
The odometer is turned by an electric motor. The geometery of the gears is extremely sensitive to prevent odometer fraud. Unfortunatly, this also causes them to stop working with age and wear.
Your best bet is to get another instrument cluster.
i considered a new instrument cluster. i have seen a couple on ebay for around $50.00 or so but none yet that are for a 4x4 so i have the light that comes on in 4 high and low. also since my temp gauge doesnt work properly i might just replace it. is it possible that it could be a wire issue like the previous owner cut it to show less miles?
kinda sucks. our speedo's are computer controlled unlike old cars that have a cable runing from the tranny to the instro panel. If your speedo is not working i would almost guarantee its the cluster. As far as the noise. Get the driveshaft checked for balance, Check the tires for balance, You didnt state what kind of tires you have. But most tires i have that are AT or MT make alot of noise.
the tires are cooper discoverer. they where on when i baught it. dont know much about the tires dont know how good they will be. im prob going to change cluster. how hard are they to swap out? its not the speedo its the trip and odometer that dont work. speedo is fine.
very easy to swap. hard to get to all the bolts. But a 6 pack should do you. will take prolly bout 2-3 hrs. My junkyard here sells them for 75 for the cluster.
as for the coopers. I have never run cooper tires myself. i have stayed with michelin, BFG's, I know my buddy has a set of Tiger paws on his mazda and they are the loudest tire i have ever heard. And they just wear funny. Truck is aligned correctly and everything tires just make noise. Hell i hear 100 trucks a day that sound like they have a flat but they dont just by the tire make. Some tires are just strictly louder then others.
the only thing i want is to try to stay close to the actual mileage with a new cluster. i have bgf at's on my 70 f250 that i might swap out. will 265-75 16 fit? i have 245-75-16 now.
My neighbor has Cooper Discoverys on his '97 Ranger. They replaced the original Firestones during the recall. That is probably where yours came from. I've never ridden in the truck, I can say whether they are loud or not. They are P265-70/R15's, so big 390, you are looking at one inch more. Shouldn't cause a problem, but don't hold it to me.
Check out my cardomain site for how to remove the instrument cluster: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/376832/4
Check car-part.com and you'll probably be able to find a cluster with your mileage on it. I paid $50 for mine a couple years ago. Cheapest they go for is about $15 at a U-pull-it. I wouldn't pay more than $75.
There is no difference betweeen a 2WD and 4X4 cluster. 2WD gets the lights too.
