Hopefully one of you guys knows the answer to this:
I have an '02 XLS that has been exhibiting the "hooting" noise since the first summer I drove it -- that is explained in a TSB that was released AFTER the vehicle was out of warranty... it only happens when the AC is on, and the humidity is just right, and the RPM of the engine is just right (normally block-to-block driving here in Columbia makes it happen all day long!). Turn the AC off, noise goes away. Jump up the RPM, noise goes away... all just like the TSB says. The remedy that the TSB prescibes is the installation of a revised evaporator case, which, of course, is not an easy job. My question is, who has actually seen this new evaporator case? What did they change in it to make it get quiet? Has anyone had this repair done, and how did it work?
Externally the cases look the same. Internally...??? If the old case could be easily modified, Ford would have had the TSB specify that. (Cheaper for you also means cheaper for them under warranty). Do what the TSB says to do (or have it done) and the problem will go away. If you don't want to do that, then you likely have no other choice that to live with the noise (or move somewhere that your daily driving habits are different).
The reason I'm asking is before going through the hell and expense that is replacing the case, I want to know what's different; It would really **** me off if all that work was done and the noise was still there.
