Primary Applications
SUPERFLO 5W-20 has been developed for the latest model year Ford and Honda gasoline vehicles to improve fuel economy and reduce high temperature engine deposits.
Although most late model North American built cars specify an SAE 5W-30 grade engine oil for use year-round, Ford and Honda have selected an SAE 5W-20 grade as the preferred grade for their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. Extensive field testing by the engine manufacturers have demonstrated that there is no compromise in engine durability in gong to this fuel saving oil grade.
Superflo 5W-20 has been engineered to meet the proposed ILSAC GF-3 and API SL improved oil standards.
Next Generation Oil Standards
The current oil categories that are approved and licensed by API are ILSAC GF-2 and API SJ. For the last 3 years the industry has been developing an upgrade to these categories to be called ILSAC GF-3 and API SL. These new standards have significantly improved fuel economy and improved high temperature deposit performance. They have been delayed from the Jan 2000 initial proposed timing and may not be licensed until late 2001.
However, these proposed categories offer performance advantages that Ford and Honda chose to use in most of their 2001 model year cars. Superflo 5W-20 is engineered to meet this new quality level and is supplied as factory fill for some of these 2001 model year cars.
Performance Features
Fuel Economy
SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains a potent friction modifier system for improved fuel economy to meet the new standard proposed in ILSAC GF-3. This is significantly higher than the current standard in ILSAC GF-2
Excellent Engine Wear
SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains effective anti-wear additives that minimize wear and scuffing of heavily loaded parts such as the valve train.
Deposit Control/Engine Cleanliness
The detergent-dispersant additive system in SUPERFLO 5W-20 has passed a double length Sequence IIIE test demonstrating that it can minimizes ring zone deposits, ring sticking and liner scuffing. The potent additive system in SUPERFLO 5W-20 also prevents sludge formation that can lead to plugged oil filters and screens, stuck valve lifters and other related problems.
Maximize Oil Drain
SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains potent oxidation inhibitors to retard oil breakdown and reduce varnish and lacquer deposits.
Low Temperature Performance
SUPERFLO 5W-20 exceeds the low temperature requirements of 5W engine oils ensuring that adequate oil flows to critical engine components during start-up.
Improved Catalyst Compatibility
SUPERFLO 5W-20 is formulated with an additive package that is designed to protect the exhaust catalyst ensuring reliable operation.
Lower Volatility
SUPERFLO 5W-20 is formulated against the proposed ILSAC GF-3 requirements to protect the emission system and minimize oil consumption.
High Temperature Foam
SUPERFLO 5W-20 meets the new foam requirement, ensuring your engine is protected from wear in high engine speed accelerations.
Precautions
Superflo 5W-20 is manufactured from high quality petroleum basestocks, carefully blended with selected additives. As with all petroleum products, good personal hygiene and careful handling should always be practiced. Avoid prolonged contact to skin, splashing into the eyes, ingestion or vapour inhalation. Special care is also recommended in handling used motor oils. An ESSO Service Data Sheet entitled "Safe Handling of Used Motor Oils" is available on request from your ESSO Representative. Please refer to our ESSO Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.

The Castrol went in at 1200 and the Penzoil at 5000.
I noticed Motorcraft 5w-30 and the Penzoil 5w-30 have that API SL specification on them, also. Might have had the GF3 thing, too.

I am putting Mobil 1 5w-30 in it. Will that cause any problems with the warranty or anything?
Also, plan to replace the transmission filter and fluid (with Mobil 1), any filter recommendations? Found a Purolator for about the same price as the dealership wanted for the Motorcraft.
Also, I have read some posts regarding the Fram filters being bad. I had used them until I came to this site. What gives? Last time I bought a Purolator PureOne filter. Any oil filter recommendations?

I use Mobil 1 5w-30. As long as the oil meets the manufacturers oil recommendation and change intervals, I wouldn't see a warranty issue. I believe I will be switching to 5w-20 at the next change since Ford said it was OK.

I only use Motorcraft FL-1Afrom Wal-Mart. Every independant test I've seen for oil filters rates Fram at the bottom. They filter out the same size particles as others but don't have as much filter media and have heard of, but not experienced, check valve problems. I'm sure they are Ok for 3K dino oil changes on a '88 Taurus but not my beloved V10.
The Pure One has gotten good marks. In fact, I believe the Pure One and the Motorcraft FL-1A are the same filter media but a different casing. Try a "google.com" search on oil filter comparos, there are some out there. Search the forums, too. BTW, many filters on the market are just simply re-badged. So, two different brands can be the same filter but with different cases. Same with auto batteries, too.
:-)
Lesson learned - Motorcraft 820 or 520-something-or-other for the V10.

Also, plan to change my transmission fluid/filter this weekend. Anyone know the torque on the pan bolts or do I just turn it till my elbow pops? Haynes hasn't got a manual, as far as I can find, so if anyone has a suggestion on a good manual that is available, let me know. Not a big Chilton fan.
Have not, but heard both were pretty good.

Must be nice to live somewhere warm or have a garage big enough for your truck.
Manuals...hmmm. I just ordered the Excursion/SD manual on CD from e-bay for 20 bucks. When it arrives I plan on posting "its worth".
As for torque, I don't know
that's why I pay others to do it.
Well, for now anyway. It's too cold here in New England to do anything outside! Especially for me, I'm a "transplant" from HAWAII! Don't ask...
I bought a Chilton's CD a while back. Better than nothing but not Haynes. Will be very intersted to see what you got on Ebay.
I used a PureOne this time (read so many bad things about Fram, I took it off early, 2k miles ). Just ordered some K&N's for next time.
It's going to be a day or two before I get the sway-bar pics for you monsta. Yesterday it was almost 60° and today it struggled to 37°. Tomorrow it's going to be around 30° with snow flurries. And since my garage isn't big enough for the 22' truck,
I'm going to wait until it at least gets above freezing before going out and laying on the ground to take pics.
