MAF and computer

Hi, just had my engine rebuilt with edlebrock performer heads and intake for a truck 5.0. Its out of a 95 bronco with mass air. I also put new 19lb injectors, roller rockers, .020 hyper pistons and E303 cam. Should I be fine with the stock MAF and Computer? I ask because someone told me my computer and MAF may not be able to take advantage of the upgrades. I was under the impression they would as long as it was not a speed density. Thanks for the help.

it will probably still idle funny with that cam. also that cam is going to suck in that bronco. you should really think about getting that pulled for something more tailored for low end power. remember your not driving a 3000lb mustang.

You will be just fine. That ECU and MAF meter will work beautifully with your setup. If you need more fuel (for any power adders), an aftermarket adjustable FPR will do the trick.

I think you should stop taking advice from this individual. The MAF efi system from FORD is quite negotiable with modifications. The only bottleneck that shows up is the 19# injectors and pushing well over 300 hp. But with an adjustable FPR, this can be easily fixed... without re-programming the ECU. I've built a 331 stroker, with a 0.545" lift cam, afr 165cc heads, long tubes, and a Trick Flow intake on a stock ECU, MAF that ran lean on 19 lb injectors. The only adjustment I made was bump the fuel pressure up 7 lbs at WOT.

The cam will idle just fine in a MAF system. It will take a few minutes of run time to get the tables correctly, but it will eventually idle smooth.

As kemical stated... Ford alphabet cams are not a great choice for the trucks. You can go alot more aggressive on your lift (with the proper springs of course) and suit the duration for low end kick. That cam is geared towards the upper power band. Your truck will be a dog until 2500 -3000 rpm with that cam and heads.

I've been extremely happy with the comp cams 35-308-8. I've run a few different cams in 5.0 trucks, and this has been by far my favorite. Idles great even with 0.533" lift. Great low end power, pulls to 5500 rpm, decent fuel mileage. Great lopey sound at stoplights too... turns alot of heads.

Hope this helps,
Mike

I did make a few changes to my brothers truck when he did his 5.8 rebuild, and he said he noticed a difference. However, he was able to run and drive his truck before that; rebuilt 351, hyper-t pistons, Perf. RPM heads, E-cam, GT-40 intaks and 65mm throttle body from a GEN 1 Lightning.

The 50 cubes on a rebuilt 5.8 make a big difference in comparison to a rebuilt 5.0. That is, in regards to stressing a stock 302 MAF ecu...

I had similar issues on a heavy breathing 347 build. ECU tuning made a noticable difference over FPR increases. I doubt the induction demands of the OP's 5.0 are near that of your brothers built 5.8 on aluminum heads.

My brother originally had a 5.0 in that truck before the 5.8; stock rotating assembly, prorted E7's, e-cam, GT-40 intakes, and 65mm throttle body. That combo ran and drove fine as well. It's when I hooked up the data logger and wideband I noticed things were off more than we both realized; more so with fueling than anything else. It wasn't earth shattering, but the program changes overall were noticeable. I did it with his truck becuase I had the software, datalogger and hardware. My brother probably would've just drove it on the stock program otherwise.

Man I wish I had a brother with such nice toys!

I bet my 306 will need some serious changes when the AFR heads are dropped in.... I'm not looking forward to the ECU tuning. I will first try wideband 02 sensors and some FPR adjustments to get the a:f ratios spot on. We'll see how it goes
