can i just disconnect the egr valve? with out setting check engine to turn on.will this cure the soot problem on the turbo veins? i have a 2003 6.0 stock.52000.miles i plan on only useing this truck to pull a trailer mabey twice a month .so it will be sitting alot. where is the best place to buy a boost guage. so i can till when the veines stick ...thanks
It won't light off the Check Engine Light unless you've got the California Emissions package on it. One caveat on pulling the plug, though...if it is sticking on you, you're going to have a tough time pulling the plug with the valve in the completely closed position. Some folks seem to think that the computer will cut back your top end boost a bit. The tuner and tech folks can tell you more about gauges and the effects of yanking the EGR valve.

Depending on the program in the PCM, it may or may not set a CEL. If it sets a CEL, you will need a tuner to disable it. Disconnecting the EGR valve will have little to no effect on the corrosion issues on the turbo vanes. The biggest problem with corrosion on the turbo vanes is poor fuel quality and lack of driving the truck.
You can get gauges from several of the vendors on FTE, my personal favorite for gauges is Diesel Manor. www.dieselmanor.com/
You may want to consider an EGT, Trans Temp and Fuel Pressure gauge as well.
I had an '04 6.0L and it let me down about 4 hours from home due to a stuck EGR Valve. I had 50,000 miles on it. It was covered under the 100,000 mile warranty with no deductible because it is part of the emissions. When I got the new EGR valve installed, I disconnected it immediately and forgot about it. I traded the truck in with 80,000 miles on it about 2 months ago on a new '08. I forgot to plug the valve back in. Hopefully the dealer will not catch it and plug it back in either. I want the new owner to never have to go through what I did.
