We hitched up the TT and headed for a weeks vacation on saturday morning. Got about 2 miles from home and the turbo started, well screeching is the best way I can describe the sound. Motor was running fine and the boost was a good solid 20 lbs, so it was putting out okay. But sounded like a scalded pig.
It's at the dealer this morning and I'm waiting for a diagnosis. Vacation is cancelled until next week hopefully. I've read lots of posts about sticking vanes, stuck wide open, stuck closed, sticky but working sometimes, even leaky oil seals. But I haven't heard of this particular failure. The sound makes me think it spun a bearing, or maybe chattering.
Anyone have a similar problem? Motor is stock as in sig.
I would say the bearings are suspect; all the dealer has to do is pop the intake tube off and try to wiggle the impeller shaft; if theres lots of play the bearings are shot.
I'd be asking questions if I was pulling that much and only had 20lbs of boost. I'd think at least 26 lbs.
The 20# seems about right for the truck. It's a light trailer (sig) and the truck hardly even knows it's there until you hit a real hill. We do have a hill near home, Colima Blvd for any locals, and that's where the noise started. When I see a grade in the mountains it will get up into the low to mid 20's.
I spoke with the dealer and they haven't done anything except a test drive to confirm the noise. Techs first notes said it sounded like an air leak. That's not what it sounded like to me at the time, but I'm keeping an open mind. It's going to be a couple of days before they get to it. Which sucks because they seem to jump right on any gasser problems I've had in the past.

Ah well, trying to go with the flow for now.

I agree with the air leak idea.Seems to me that 20# of boost is a little low and a air leak would confirm that.Sorry about the postponed vacation but hopefully they can get it sorted out and get you on your way.
A buddy has an 06 250 amarillo edition. His bearings went out in his. It wasnt stock though. He had a tuner, exhaust, and air kit in it. Cant remember if he footed the bill or not.
I was at the dealer 4 days ago for a 30,000 tune up on my 06 250 and the service manager said they received a letter from Ford stating they needed to move the turbo diesels at least 25 miles once a week to prevent the turbo's from rusting up. He also said Ford was not covering them because it wasnt there fault for letting them sit. 25 miles seems like alot. It seems that just starting and running for awhile would lube things up...keep mileage down for selling also. Maybe this is a 6.4 ltr thing.
Fixed! I picked my truck up from the dealership repair shop last night. The tech diagnosed it as a broken turbo shaft. It was still pumping boost when I dropped it off, so I don't know how it can do that with a broken shaft.
They replaced it with a reman unit and so far it seems to be fine. Is that normal for a warranty replacement to be a reman? I expected a new part. I guess they have to do something with the thousands of turbos Ford is replacing each year.
Three working days to get it back to me. More than I would like, but better than some members have reported.
