a lot of it is just what you like personally. i use fram but am not against motorcraft(except they're higher). i WOULD recommend taking the breather top off and removing the "soup bowl" with a sawzall or grinder or some power tool. it amazed me how much better the truck breathed without that restriction. some people think it makes truck noise louder, but i'm half deaf, so didn't notice any more noise than a normal diesel. LOL the main thing with the filters is make sure you keep a clean filter. truck will like you better for it.
