Exclamation 7.3L Fuel Filter...

Where is the fuel filter on the 7.3L diesel? I have a 00' F-350 and am wondering where it is. Is it easy to replace? What tools are needed? How many filters are there? What are/is the part # of the filter(s)? My truck has been running a little sluggish, stalling, etc. and I'm starting at the fuel filter. I'd rather do it myself rather then paying Schmit Ford $75.00+ to do it.

Thanks,
Dan

Go to dieselinnovations.com/techfiles/fuelfilter.pdf for a step by step. Don't forget the http:// in front of the web address. Sorry, I can't put the web address all together because of this sites stupid linking policy.

The fuel filter is in a plastic canister on top of the engine. Changing requires a filter wrench or a hammer/punch to remove the cap. The canister is right behind the plastic "plate" that says powerstroke.

You need a Wix 3518 - we sell them for $16.76.

fuel filter install HELP!

I am able to get tha cap off, but am puzzled by the fact that I can't tell how to seperate the screen from the cap

The filter is just sitting in the bottom of the filter holder
I have bought a Napa fuel filter assembly and it has the screen and filter together
I am at a loss
I am going to check the PDF, but am not too interested in paying Ford $66.00
for the damn same thing I just bought already. UGH

The cap comes with a new filter if you use oem, see if Brian has them.
On an aftermarket setup the filter may be seperate.

Thumbs up

Dan,
My truck has the type of filter setup where the cap and the filter are all one piece. I bought my truck used and initially was not sure which filter setup I had. It didn't take me long to find out. I found that my cap and filter are all one piece. All I have to do is unscrew the old one and screw the new one down. It's pretty easy! As was stated earlier the filter is under that black plate that says "Power Stroke". Just take the nuts off and move the plate aside. Your filter will be right there in front of you. My cap is black and has fins radiating out from the center. I understand you can us a 1/2 inch socket drive to get it off but I have also found that 2 Cresent wrenchs or 2 plyers holding on to those fins (the two wrenches are across from one another) work really well. Just grab the fins, turn it counter clockwise and it should come right off. Since my whole filter & cap is throw away, I'm not sure how the replaceable filter setup is but I'm sure a lot of these guy's can help with that.

Good Luck!!!
Paul

My truck as well (1999) has the single unit filter. Pull the old one out and just drop a complete new one in its place. Mine was from AutoZone!

If you have an aftermarket filter on your truck the cap and the filter are one piece. If your filter has the screen stuck to the cap it is an aftermarket that has just pulled apart. The OEM filter is a filter that drops in and then a seperate cap that screws on top of that. If the replacement you have isn't just a filter cartrige then you must have the cap to go on top. You can't reuse the aftermarket cap. You will have to buy a new OEM filter cap for it or buy another aftermarket filter.

You've got it backwards. The factory filter comes in two pieces. Just the drop in filter and reuse the screw on cap. A lot cheaper to replace this way. The aftermarket filters come as a single unit, filter and cap built together. Because of this they usally cost $10 to $20 more.

If you lost your cap, we can sell you a new one from Wix. We have them in stock, we just don't advertise about them. E-mail us.
