i have asked about this before, but i cant find the thread that it is in so i'll ask again. i have a 1978 f-250 (if anyone has ever seen me post they know what i have by now, so sorry) and i am looking to incorporate some sort of hydro assist system on it. so where does the box get drilled and tapped? and what all am i going to need to do this? sorry for being so vague but i am completely clueless as to how this is done. i saw a related thread on bronco website, but it doesnt help much as it was for a different type steering box. i dont have any good pics of my box at the moment, but here is what i am dealing with so far:
i'll try to get pics of my box soon...but i am sure SOMEONE has a similar steering box as this isnt the only 78 ford out there...thanks in advance for the help...by the way, i know it doesnt look like much but it has come a long way, and i have many more parts going on it
i've done both, in fact i am working on one now for a fellow bronco buddy!
they are really all the same... you have a high pressure side when turning left and a high pressure side when turning right! best bet is to follow the pressure vessels inside the box and figure out where they go! gotta have one tapped in front of the piston one way and the other tapped in back of the piston pushing the other way!
pirate has a killer writeup for those who are intuitive enough to take on a project such as this. thats what i used/use!
to tell you the truth....that is prob # 9 on my list...
finish front 4 link....got the subframe and spring buckets done.....oh and panhard mount...
make hangers for the rear, make disc brake for rockwells (yes i know i should of done that already), brake lines, tires and wheels ($$$$)....then i'll go with the hydro assist....but i can turn with just 52's or 44's not sure yet w/o the assist...
its gonna be streeatalbe....so yeah discs on all 4's....i got me a sweet high steer arm for it....help out my drag link angle alot....
somtimes i wish i could make it non street legal and run a converging 4link and full hydro, and pinion brakes....but ohwell....it will be one badass truck that i can drive to the trail....
its mounted inside the framerails...frankly i am intimidated by this project, but i want to learn how to do it as education rarely makes anyone dumber. that box kind of looks like mine. i dont know...i have never had my box apart either, so i am not exactly sure how everything works...thus, not sure where to drill
jus look at the pictures, and do what they did....the best thing you can do is not trying to understand how to do it "cold"....what to do is just get your off and get it apart and just follow the intructions just like the pics....
