Have an 87 E-150 w 4.9l; went into store, came out and it wont start..
Cranks like crazy, has spark and fuel at the relief valve. Was going to play with the timing but have never done that before, so a little hesitant, plus it wont stop raining. Will start on ether and run as long as you spray it.
Some might notice i've posted this problem before, last time it just started after two weeks of not running, and ran for the next couple months. Throughly stumped...

Not much to play with as far as timing is concerned as the computer takes care of that. Unless you timing chain jumped, in which case a time light should tell you that.
your spraying ether in and it runs- that means you don't have fuel, if you push the schrader on the fuel relief valve and some fuel spills out, that doesn't mean anything.
you need to put a fuel pressure gauge on it. and find the pump spec for your truck.
i've seen pumps that are supposed to be 60-66psi, and prime at 55psi and cause a no-start
if you don't have a fuel pressure tester, have someone turn the key to the on position and don't start it, go underneath the truck and listen for buzzing from the gas tank (fuel pump priming) buzzing should last for a couple of seconds and stop, it still won't tell you fuel pressure, but if it doesn't even turn on, your not getting power, or its dead. so check your fuel pump relay for power.
you already diagnosed that fuel is your problem, so now you need to determine if you have a mechanical fuel issue, or an electrical fuel issue
