Exhaust tips?

Looking to add an exhaust tip to my 07 expedition, Who makes a good one and who makes the best one for the price. I like the look of borla's exhaust tips, curious to how it would make it sound.

Does the exhaust tip change the sound of the exhaust???

Which style are you specifically looking at? We have a selection, but unfortunately our site does not have pictures of them yet. We hope to have something ready by the end of October, but in the meantime, if you can send a PM to us, we can probably get you a high quality tip at a very competitive price.

The exhaust tip would have to be pretty long and big in dia. to change sound.

I take it you have a completey stock exhaust. 2.5" or 3"? I think a 12" long X 3.5" 15 deg. slash cut rolled edge tip would look good. You can't go too long with the tip or you'll get into one of the bends on the exhaust.

I have been using Magnaflow tips however any major manuf. is good. I would go with a weld on tip versus a clamp-on tip. Make sure to get a Stainless tip, the Chrome plated tips only last a year or two before they rust up.

Yes I am complete stock on the exhaust. I am thinking the exhaust is probably 2.5" but will measure to make sure before i order one. how do you typically install it? Do you slide it over the existing exhaust or do you cut the exhaust shorter then slip it on and weld it? I don't want it to change the sound much, if it were to make it louder my wife would get pretty pissed off. On my old explorer I changed the whole exhaust out to the gibson side swept, jeez it made it loud as hell, especially inside, she told me she was embarrased to drive it.

Why weld on instead of clamp on? I had a clamp on my explorer and it seemed to do the job.

A tip may alter the tone in some cases, but it will most certainly not make it louder. Why weld on instead of clamp on? Because any tip that is designed to be clamped on is substandard in quality, most likely chrome plated cold steel that will rust. A weld on tip can also be more precisely position for the best appearance, and once welded on, it doesn't move or loosen. A clamp also traps moisture between the pipe and the tip, encouraging rust and rot.

this is the tip i am considering:

http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts-mufflers/65A2447A0A0.aspx

or

http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts...A2442A0A0.aspx

Do you think it would change the tone much? Probably would go for the 6 in length or would 9 inch be better?

I would go with the longest tip you can fit.

Borla no doubt makes a good product but I think there tips aren't very good looking.

Mgnaflow Rolled, Double Wall- Large Diameter T-304 Stainless Steel Tip

Part #: 35190

3.5" Diameter
2.5" O.D. Inlet
10" Length

I think that tip would look great on your Expedition.

You'll want to cut some of the tailpipe off so you can't see the pipe inside the tip.

Weld on tips are by far more secure and nicer than clamp-on tips.

Unfortunately my double wall rolled angle tips are out of stock, since my manufacturer switch most of their manufacturing to making OEM tips for Ford. Great for Ford, bad for me. I have had a severe shoratage of truck tips all summer.

i measured my tip yesterday on my 07 expedition, it seems it is 2.75 in. Is this possible?? When looking online it seems most are either 2.25, 2.5 or 3 in?

whats the deal? I re measured 3 times and got 2.75 every time.

A 16ga. 2.5" pipe measures 2.375" I.D. X 2.500" O.D.

It is possible your exhaust is 2 3/4". OEMs sometimes use 2 3/4" tubing however it is sort of an Oddball size and makes it hard to find tips, mufflers and etc. to fit.

If you indeed do have a 2 3/4" tailpipe, I would get a tip for a 3" inlet and go to an exhaust shop and have the end of the tailpipe expanded to 3" O.D. to fit the 3" inlet tip and have them weld it on. 3" is a common size and you should have no problem finding a tip you like with a 3" inlet.

can any exhaust shop expand the tailpipe to fit the 3 in?

Yes.

I would call ahead and tell them what you need before hand, you may have to make an appointment.

There are tools out to expand exhaust pipe that only reqire a ratchet and a socket. I don't know how they work though.

More likely the shop will use an insert to adapt the size. They would probably take a piece of either 2.5" or 3" tubing and either bump it up to fit the size you need, or swedge it down to fit the 2.75" size. It adds an extra seam, but that aside, it has good results.
