Battery Discharge

Hi all. If I let my truck sit overnight, by morning the batteries will be discharged enough for it not to start. I was just wondering what fuses in both the engine compartment and the cab, should be hot with the key in the off position cause I have a bunch of em on well after I turn the key off and remove it. Or what would cause such a big discharge in such a short amount of time? I know I need new battery cables, could that be the problem?

That could be. How old are the batteries?

You could have the alternator tested, or unhook it after you park the truck for the day & see what happens in the AM....

I agree unhook the alternator overnight and see if it cranks in the morning. They will drain the batt if bad.

I have unhooked the alternator and the batteries have a full charge so lets see where we are in a couple of hours.

If previous test doesn't work try removing both positive terminals tie one out of way so not to touch anything ,take other terminal and put a voltmeteror test light between battery post & terminal if you get more than 3-4 volts or light is on you have a drain. Make sure everthing is off while doing this.If you find voltage or light start pulling fuses 1by1.When light goes out u have found the circuit that is causing you're drain,Good Luck..

I was just going to say that, also works to take the test light and substatute a fuse if you have a dead short that keeps blowing fuses

Well, form 10 am till now the batteries have gone from a little better than 12 volts down to about 9.8, so I guess Its time to start pulling fuses. Sidenote, I pulled both positive battery cables and placed a volt meter between the passenger side positive battery post and the passenger side positive cable and got a reading of almost the entire total battery voltage. Am I doing this right?

Yep, that's right. You have a short somewhere. Hook a test light the same way start pulling fuses until the test light goes out, that will be the circuit you need to dive into.

YES pull fuses 1by1 then replace. Again make sure every thing is off.Start with fuses for dome lights & door locks first, they have power 100% of time.
