Whats the best media to use? I just recently bought a blast cabinet now its time to by media? I'm going to use it on aluminum and steel parts. What would be a good material for both? Thanks

A fine grade silica. There is a courser sand called black beauty that you can use on cast iron to remove rust. It is too course for aluminum and is overkill for just removing paint. The finer stuff should be white and feel more like powder than sand. It works good for aluminum and removing paint and light rust.

You don't want to use sand in your blast cabinet for health reasons. Sand dust will cause a disease known as silicosis. I use aluminum oxide for steel and glass bead for delicate material like aluminum. I buy my media at an Industrial Supply house locally, so you might looking in the yellow pages under "media blasting" or some variations of that to find a local supplier. You will pay a lot to have this type of material shipped to your house. I think the Black Beauty may be OK, but I'm not sure. I think to coal slag and I am unsure if there are any health risks associated with this material. I did see that Tractor Supply carries this in there store and I may consider using this material in my pressure blaster for outside use on very large items.

There is a trade name of BLACK BEAUTY that isn't really a silica. It is coal slag. I've tried it and I like it a bunch. It doesn't dust like sand and it cuts well. I don't have a blast cabinet so I have used it siphon-style. Its pretty economical as I recall.
