I have a 351w lying around my house. I recently purchased a 63 ranchero for 100 bucks. My idea that I had is to slap the winsdor into it. I want it to be in the mid 10s to mid 11s range. Im planning on running a c6 with stall, and either a 9inch or an 8.8 inch with around 4.11s iand slicks in it. Could someone please give me some advice on the engine. bore it? stroke it? leave bottom end stock? I need to do a complete teardown and I need everything from carb to pan. I would like to make is sort of a budget build and I was going to set the limit for the cash on the engine to about 2200 dollars. can anyone tell me if this is doable, reccomend parts such as cam, carb, intake, etc.
With a .030 overbore, which gets you to 360 approx, and the right cam, carb and headers, you can claim 400+ horse from you 351. I think you might also need new heads to make this happen. Look through the threads here, it has been spec'd out several times.
I would spend money on the rods and rod bolts etc to make sure the bottom end holds together. 9.5 compression and then cam/valvetrain/carb.
How you gonna get that power on the ground?
Go 9 inch, as that will allow you to change ratios like you change socks. 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, Bonneville, groceries, you know, a gear for every occaision.
Check out 4 bar rear suspension also.
And frame connectors...and redo the front end so it don't collapse on you.
Your Windsor will be tight in the engine bay, so measure up before you spend a lot of money. If it needs surgery to fit that might break the bank.
If you are going to run 10's you will need a cage as well....
If this is getting too rich, swap the 351 for a 302/aod and run 13.5s with good tires and slapper bars.....
10 seconds in an early '60s car built out of steel? Sorry.. maybe if you shoehorned the Windsor into a Miata. There's no way that car is as light as a Mustang, and you'll need lots more $$ than your budget to get a Stang into the 10s. My buds '73 Duster runs low 13s to just dipping into the 12s on slicks.. if he gets the launch just right. It has a 360 with aluminum heads, cam, proper exhaust.. and the car is a featherweight at 3000lbs.
The Ranchero isn't much over 3000 lbs, but the problem will be putting the power to the ground. Especially power enough to run 10s. Plus, if you're going to run 10's in that vintage Ranchero you better have gone through it and beefed it up steering and suspension wise, or buy some good life insurance.
I put a hot 351w in a 66 mustang when I was stupid and young. When I could control the wheel hop I could turn a low 11 but not in a truck that weight at least twice as much without some expensive tricks.
Had to chain the the engine to the shock tower to keep from crushing the opposite header "again" when I really got into it.
10sec 351 on 2200.00? I just dont think you are giving your self much of a chance you need to call a good machine shop and do a sit down with them, they are in the know and can give you alot of info on a strong build.Remember that the power comes from the amount of rpm and tourqe you build, but go fast is not just related to the engine. Hook up is just as important, you have to learn how to get the thing to go streight and how to get counter balence by changeing the center of lift of your car. forinstance if you have wheel hop,you would benifit by bringing the traction bar mutch closer to the front of the car like as far up as the front of the doors. by doing this you just increased the amount of weight the unit must lift, now you can go to even biger tire to gain more traction. you see there is so much to think of. On a 2200. budget I think you can do well if you look for 12
A huge nitrous kit will get you into the 10's once or twice.
I just don't think your going to get there for that little of money.
My 88 5.0 Mustang 3180#, 3360# with me in it at the time, on slicks with 100hp NOS, 3.55 gears, T-5 tranny and 26x8.5" slicks ran 12.40's. 10's takes alot of cubic dollars to obtain.
