i built a 331 stroker fr my Mercury. All the parts are top of the line, and brand new, however i keep hearing a strange wet hissing like sound when im just turning over the motor(even if i do it manualy). this then progresses to what sounds like an exaust leak when running. heres the symptoms
here are some of the symtoms...
1.wet hissing sound kinda like boiling (when running or not) from cylinder#4 each time it comes up in the rotation (this seems to be the problem, but what causes it?)
2.cyl.#4 is where the exaust leak like sound comes from
3.fouled-out plugs
4.abnormaly strong smell of fuel in engine compartment
the engine consists of...
1.a D.S.S. shortblock assy.
2.edelbrock alum. heads and intake
3.edelbrock performer carb, and cam, and lifters
4.melling high pres. oil pump
5.milodon 7qt. pan
6.crane pushrods
7.full MSD Ignition-6al control box, probillet distributer, blaster ss coil, 8.5 mm plug wires
8.bosch platnum 4 plugs
and other stuff.....
pull that valve cover off and check that your valve isn't hung up and staying open somewhat on that side! Did you check when assembling that all push rods were the same length, valves, springs etc. Could be a weak spring. Let us know what happens!
Did you check the valve movement with the cover off? (measuring with caliper) I am sure you tourqued it in sequence? How much undertorqued is it? did you use a torque wrench? It shouldn't hurt under torque as long as you squish the gasket some,Overtouque is another story!!
spray carb cleaner around the intake, carb etc. if the motor revs up you have a vacum leak. if not then you have another problem. how the pcv setup? is it working properly.
yes it was torque in sequence, but they took a 12pt. 5/16 inch, which i only had in a small wrench and am going to get a socket today to check them with a torque wrench
