i got a 2000 F.250 Superduty thats in real good shape, i can count the amount of times on both hands its ever been put in four wheel drive, its just got some miles on the 5.4 thats in it and it already uses oil and smokes upon startup, so when the motor finally goes i wanted to see what all it would take to put a 5.9 24 valve cummins into it, if at all possible id like to keep the fords transmission if at all possible because i really dont want to put dodge crap in my ford, i seen a 92 F.350 with the 24 valve in it, the motor was powered by a cummins computer, the rest of the ford was powered by the fords computer, it also had the dodge 5 speed tranny,id like to keep it auto
I have been thinking of a conversion as well. I will never buy a new truck again. My truck is well built and the V10 is running strong at 145,000 mi. If and when i do need an upgrade on my truck i will definetely consider a Cummins Conversion only for the added MPG. I will keep my V10 and insert that in my 1968 Cougar, Just wishful thinking but I am looking into it. It will sure beat the hell out of buying a new $40,000 truck. Please keep us posted if you go thru the conversion I would like to see some pics as well if you have them available. Good Luck Pal.
just a note here, i will not be doing the conversion til the 5.4 dies, i dont know that it will soon because im looking in to puting a new timing belt in it
I am in the middle of my conversion V-10 to 12V. I have a '00 Ex 4x4. I am using the Destroked.com adapter & flexplate. I purchased the adapter & motor mounts from www.Autoworldmt.com. All the parts are top notch. Scott @ Destroked has been very helpful with many questions. So far it is going well. There are many little things that consume a lot of time. I spent about 4 weeks online, in the evening, researching what is required. www.cummins-conversion.com is an excellent source of information also.
I'm swapping a common rail cummins and 48RE into my Excursion in the next few weeks. I've been planning it and gathering parts for over a year. Here is a link to my latest progress... other than battery connections and a power and ground to the ECM, it took a total of two wires to start and run the engine on the stand. The dodge transmission is going to use a standalone controller/valvebody from ATS.
Anyone need a perfectly good Ford V10 and 4R100???
Putting a 466 in a light duty truck? Are you mad? Do you know how much a 466 weighs? I'm swapping a 12v cummins and a ZF6-650 into my '01 SD here in the next few months. ttaa97 has the list of the best places to get info a few posts up. The people at AutoWorld in Montana have been helpful already.
Now back to the 466. That thing is a good 500 pounds heavier than the 5.9 cummins and 600 pounds heavier than the 6.0 or 7.3 which both weigh somewhere in the 900 to 1000 pound range. Plus it holds more oil, more coolent and if you put that allison transmission in there that is a lot of fricken weight. Not to mention how physically big a 466 is. If you are really that dedicated to it why don't you look for a 530 or 570. They are the same block and you get 64 or 104 more cubic inches and they are only 60 pounds heavier. I mean, if you are already adding 500+ pounds over what the truck was designed for what's another 60? Pretty sure you're going to need a body lift, custom motor mounts, and to run electric fans. Then is the super duty radiator big enough for that size engine if you decide to pull anything with it that would labor it.
If you are that motivated it would be pretty cool in the end, another engine that might be cool if you found one that fits in the same category is the C series 8.3 liter cummins. That floats around the 1500 pound mark and is one heck of an engine. We have one in both our combine and Case 7140 tractors and I'm impressed by both.
It will fit, sure I'm a little out there for trying. The benefit of a 466 vs a 530 is the shorter stroke. I'm going to be drag racing it mostly, so the higher rpm ability will be of use here. I'm very aware of a 1400 pound engine and 300 pound tranny. I'll be happy if it hits 11's in the qtr mile, any faster is that much better. It's more of a proof it can be done, and for senseless fun, maybe a little shock factor. It will physically fit a Super Duty better than any of the older trucks. The firewall doesnt need to be cut in too far either(about 3"). If I can swing the CA gas to diesel swap paperwork, then I'll drive it as much as possible. I have a 4 core Hd radiator for a powerstroke, and aftermarket intercooler in the plans too.
I know a guy that is putting one in a 74 F250 too.
Ah, if your looking for rev's than the shorter stroke would work in your favor. Another thought to throw out there but what about the DT408? I know then your losing 58 cubic inch, which in my world is horrible, but I don't know how much different the bore and stroke is on that than the 466 but it's the same block. As far as weights and what not go I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting into, around here there are some idiots that wanted to put a 3208 cat into a chevy half ton truck because "a 3208 Cat is just a big block chevy with different heads" Now anyone that has even looked at a 3208 knows this isn't true but they tried, and tried, and failed. Imagine this, the tranny and torque converter wouldn't bolt up? Who knew? I don't doubt you that this swap is possible with the right amount of time and motivation, on ford-trucks.com there is a guy that has a 8.3 cummins in a super duty so if that fits the IH should fit. It would definitely have the wow factor when you see it.
For me I'm going to be swapping out the 5.4 for a 12v cummins here in about 6-8 months so my fuel economy should be going up there. Besides with the Triton V8 badging on the fender I'm going to be putting farm diesel in it which is about 50 cents cheaper a gallon.
