Ok guys I need a little help here...I'm going to buy a set of Motto Metal MO951's in Black and I need advice on which offset will work best. The wheels come in a -12,+18, and +30 offset. I will be mounting a set of BFG Allterrian AT KOs size 305/65R18 on to them. I want the wheel to stick out more than factory but I also do not want the wheel sticking out so far that it is going to chew up my paint.
The local tire and four wheel shops are all giving me different pieces of advice so I thought I would throw it out to you guys.
Discount tire told me that they thought the -12 would stick out so far that I would need to trim the front air dam. They suggested one of the other two offsets.
The local four wheel shop says any of them will fit so it is just a matter of preference.
I would really appreciate your help and any picks that you might have would also be appreciated.
Negative offset means the wheel will stick out. Positive offset will stick the wheel under your truck more. I'm not sure what the offset of the factory wheels are, but -12 offset should by fine.
Thanks BigTony4...the factory offset is a +42...that is what Discount told me anyway.
So with that said even the positive offsets would stick out more than the factory ones do. I'm really hoping some folks with after market wheels can show me some pics and tell me what their offsets are.
They show a 17" OE wheel has a +44 offset, so using 42 or 44 would give nearly the same result.
The 305's are 20mm wider than the OE 285's, but the wheels are 2" wider than the OE's. If I'm crunching the numbers correctly, the new tires will theoretically (key word) overhang the new wheels ~5/8" (16mm) less on each side than the OE tires overhang the OE wheels.
The calculator shows a +30 wheel is 11mm closer to the spring and 39mm farther out on the outside. +18 is 1mm farther/51mm farther, and -12 is 31mm farther/81mm farther.
Factoring the tire overhang change, the tires would be: +30 is 5mm farther/23 mm farther, +18 is 17mm farther/35mm farther, and -12 is 47mm farther/65mm farther.
Double check my math, I may be all wet, but it seems like the +30 would do what you're looking for.
Thanks VFR_Man!!!
I'll have to read your post a couple more times to make sure I understand everything but that is exactly the info I needed.
In a perfect world I would want my wheels/tires to stick out about 1in from the fender. I've noticed some trucks around my town that have them sticking out about 2 to 3 inches and I think that is just to much for a 12.2 in. wide tire.
The positive 30 mm rim will work very good. The factory offset for the 18 inch FX 4 rims are + 44. I do see trucks with the + 6 rims, they stick out past the fender wells but seem to be ok. Still I would not want the tires to be past the outer fender well.
The moto metal's you mentioned are + 30 for my FX4. If I get any rims it will probably be them. I already have BFG 285 65 18's on the stock rims with no leveling kit. I don't think I will have to get a leveling kit for these + 30 rims and reusing my current tire.
Ive got -12 on my truck now. I'll tell you one thing about them you cant keep you truck clean with them. But it looks real good. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures Ill show you.
Thanks for all your input guys. Yesterday I finally bought my rims and had them installed.
I ended up not getting the Motto Metals that I mentioned above. I have a True Blue F150 and I saw my same exact truck with black rims on it about a week ago and I did not like the look of it as much as I thought I would. So I went with a machined finish clear coated wheel instead. I did not want a chrome wheel, just because I'm not a chrome guy. Anyway I went with the Gunner 6s by MB Motoring. I'll post pics as soon as I can. They only came in a +25 offset so that is what I bought. I think it looks really good...it makes the tires stick out about .5" from the fender with my Nitto 285/65/18s. When I go up to the 305 they should stick out the full inch I wanted.
. I don't know what my offset is. Can I get under and measure it? My BFG MUDD Terrane 285/75/17 stick out about 1.5. I like the way it looks, but Pa state inspection requires fender flares for this, so I put the factory wheel back on for the inspection
