overdrive causing problems

I have a 1995 ford f250 psd with a E4OD and if i drive the truck with o/d on the tranny starts to shift hard, once it shifts out of o/d and into 3rd. The o/d light will start do blink on and off. If i drive the truck with o/d off i have no problems. any ideas?

When this started to happen to mine, I tried to deny myself a new tranny by trouble shooting all other options...I changed the fluid and filter, put a new speed sensor in the rear dif, had it reflashed at the dealer...I nursed through about a year and 20k miles (90% with o/d off) and then I put a new tranny in it yesterday (Ford rebuild, 3yrs/75k miles). The codes read excessive slippage and the dealer recommended replacement 13 months ago when I had it reflashed...It would go into safe mode (flashing o/d, and hard shifting) any time I would drive anywhere but flat straight highway (60-70 mph)...hills or stop and go would indicate o/d off to avoid throwing a code. It did start to go into safe mode with o/d off over the past couple months. I knew it was time.

pull the codes, either 4th is getting weak or the converter clutch slips, either way the hard shifts is fail safe, it goes to max line pressure, i really like thaose shifts....... go from a dig she will probably bark second and third if you'll got stock tires on it

More than likely your tranny is headed south like these ^^guys^^ said. A bad RABS (rear antilock brake sensor) can cause the trans to act up too. It's located on top the rear differential. It's magnetic and will accumulate small metal shavings or just wear out. Check the sensor wires & connector for corrosion and/or bent pins. Clean the sensor and replace it. Also check all the electrical connection on the tranny for the same.
