Hi Everyone. I am back with another concern. Here lately I have noticed my lariat 5.4 getting louder as I accelerate through the first few gears. It is not loud when I get to cruising speeds. I keep my tach under 2k as I accelerate. All the fluid levels seem to be ok and temp gauge is dead in the middle between hot and cold. I guess that is normal. Do you think this is the fan clutch or maybe a leaky manifold?
it is just a louder than normal noise when I accelerate through the first few gears. When I get into OD I can't hear it unless I press the gas a little harder. It kinda sounds like a fan noise but that is the best I can describe it. Also if I turn the AC and radio off I can hear a slight Tick...Tick... Tick. It not nearly as noticable outside the cab as it is inside the cab. When I lift the hood I can hear the injectors ticking but that is at a much faster rate than the tick I hear inside the cab. Thanks for the replies.
i think mine is going bad as well... i can hear my fan every few mornings when i leave my driveway.... and there is no way that the engine is warm enough that soon. as for the ticking... i hear it some too.... but mine isnt very loud, so thats why im not too concerned. some people get the cam phasers changed out, and i guess that cures a common problem.
have you done any work to the intake??? if something is loose on the intake or vacuum system, it could cause the engine to sound louder, and cause engine ping
get a stethoscope and listen with the engine running to all vacuum lines and such, or get a bottle of soapy water and spray on all fittings, seals, etc and look for bubbles or disturbances
The fan noise is normal upon start. When you start the engine the fan clutch is generally engaged and the noise is due to the design of the fan, which is high output. This sounds much like a MAC truck and such. The fan works via viscous coupling, so when the motor warms up it will engage and disengage as needed to cool the motor. Mine usually goes away once i get down the street. I do notice that this delay changes depending on the temperatures outside.
Generally this fan clutch will outlast the rest of the cooling system. Unless you have high mileage, I wouldn't expect it to be going bad.
As for the ticking, I would suggest use a stethlescope, as the previous member posted, and check for exhaust leaks.
