This may be a stupid question, if it is I am sorry, I did search. but still have no idea.
I want to use this distributor on my my 460 but it says the Gear is not compatible with roller cams. what are roller cams? and how do i tell if thats what i have?
roller cams use roller lifters, non of the factory cams used in 460 were roller except on some crate motors. now if you hae an aftermarket cam well even then very few actually went to a roller cam.
so do you know if you have the factory cam or not?
is the engine in the vehicle and assembled or do you have it out? you could pull the cam and see, if it's aftermarket it should have a grind number stamped into the back end of it. you could measure the valve lift with a dial indicator and if it's below .600 you can pretty well assume it's not a roller, pull the intake and check the lifters themselves, if they have a tie bar between them then roller if not then non roller.
Another way of guessing is pull the current dist and look at the gear, if a stock gear then you don't have a rolller cam, if a bronze gear then you probably do.
What if i assume its not roller cam and get the dist. and if it turns out that it is a roller cam, just get a bronze gear then? or is the gear even replaceable?
There is another distributor gear that is made out of plastic besides the bronse one. It's as simple as punching out the roll pin, slide the old one off, slide new one on, and reinstall the roll pin.
personally with that intake I would be extremely surprised if someone put a roller cam in that engine. just go ahead and get the dist as I would almost guarantee it's not a roller cam.

why?

look a roller cam isn't make you more power , if you dont have the set up it's not going to make a difference put a hyd. in it and be done you can not use a solid or roller with your set up if your going to spend 5-6 or 7000dollars for a motor then you dont need to look on the roller page..........
because that is a low rpm torque type intake, roller cams for the most part are high rpm cams, if you have a roller cam with that intake you have a mismatched setup and it's not the best power making combination.

ok, thanks.
