They "went belly up"...but another company bought the rights to their name and have started up again, but no more 1894's or M.70s...at least something like that happened.
Winchester was owned by Browning for a while. I'm not sure if its still true but the SuperX shotgun & the Browning Gold are the same gun. I expect to see levers stage a comeback due to Hornady inventing a pointed bullet for the tubular mag centerfire guns like the 30/30 These new bullets increase the range & knockdown to almost equal to a 308 winchester. Marlin is making a lever 308 Marlin with almost identical ballistics as the 308 Win. I own 2 lever rifles. A Browning BLR in 308 & a Marlin 39A. Both are great shooters. I have a antique Winchester Model 1892 in 25-20. Its my grandfathers old deer rifle. Its one of my oldest guns in my collection.
Check out local gun shops and gun shows. You'll be able to find a used one at a reasonable price.
I have a Marlin 336C that I've had for 30+years. My brother has a Mod. 94 and, truth be told, I'd take the Marlin over the Win any day.
I just bought my son a Marlin for about $400 brand new.
I can't stand the newer model ones, but I love the older (pre-1964) model '94s. My brother has one from the 1920s and my dad has one that dates from about 1915. Best shooting guns I've ever had the pleasure of shooting. Big old, heavy chunks of steel, but shoot like a dream. I love the lever action too.
i used to work in a gun store and all winchester rifles were stopped being manufactured...I think think it was in feb of 06 that they closed their doors, but i think a foreign commpany bought them out and they might start making 1300 (Shotguns) again and maybe some other ones ....TThey kinda did what Browning didi when they sold out but they make more than just a shotgun for Browning....
If you have one take care of it because when we heard the news our price tags jumped anywhere from $20-80 and that was almost 2 years ago
I've got a model 94 Winchester. It was made in 1918 and on the barrel it says, ".30WCF, new nickle barrel made for smokeless powder."
I got it a few years ago from a guy who's wife told him to sell all of his guns or get divorced. It was his grandfather's and he sold me the Winchester for $30. It shoots like a dream and I have yet to have a problem with it. I take it with me whenever we go out into the hills because it's a great coyote gun.
