Which tranny do I have?
I have a 2000 Explorer V6 that has a burnt up tranny. I was told that the 8th letter in the VIN denotes the type of tranny. This letter happens to be an "A". Can anyone tell me what tranny it is so that I don't potentially pick up the wrong one at a salvage yard?

The 8th digit is the engine. There is no digit in the VIN that denotes the transmission. There is a blue tag in the driver's door opening that has a column listed TRANS. Under that is a code that tells what trans you have.
It will tell you that you have a 5R55E transmission.
It will tell you that you have a 5R55E transmission.
