Well I hooked up a mechanical oil gauge and it still acts the same. When you first start it it has good pressure then as you drive it starts to drop around five PSI. If you stop and let it sit it climbs to around 7-10 PSI. I don't get clattering from the lifters. Would running a heavier oil help or maybe some lucas oil additive? I still can't tell if it's a oil pump, a flow problem or washed out bearings on the main. any help would be great
running thicker oil is only a bandaid fix, how many miles? if I had to guess I'd say it's just the pump and If you do get in there replace the oil pickup screen as well.
Oil pumps are NOT the usually cause of low oil pressure ( unless the screen is clogged or the pickup gasket is leaking) a worn engine is. The engine clearances open up as the engine heats up and the oil thins out and the pressure drops. The oil pump can be replaced without removing the engine. These engines usually run 40-45 psi cold and 20 hot at idle. The pressure hot will usually increase 10 pounds per 1000 rpm , up to the pumps bypass\relief limit-about 45 pounds.
cut your oil filter open with a can cutter a give filter good lookin.i agree oil pumps dont put out pressure.its the resistence that the oil pump has that give you oil pressure.
20w50 oil will help, and runnig about 1/2 quart over full may also help because a worn engine has more oil circurlating in the engine and less in the pan. These may be temporary fixes, but they could delay a rebuild or replacement for a long time.
286merc is right. I have a dodge dakota that I drive daily. I've always used a fram oil filter because that's all I could find. Walmart now carries ford oil filter for my trk. Got one put it on & was surprised at the higher oil pressure. I don't have a mech. guage to know the psi but the pressure always was about 2/3 on the gauge. When I put on the ford filter the guage is on the highest mark. It does make a difference.
