I have purchased and xm for my truck since I spend so much time in it (and I hate commercials). It is now installed with the included vent mount but I don't like the fact that it is blocking my cold air in this 100 deg. heat. Just below the driver side inboard vent and left of the a/c fan control **** is a trim piece that I assume is where the 4wd hub lock switch etc. would be placed. I think I can mount my xm in this trim piece and be able to neatly hide the wires. However I will need to remove the piece to be able to do it. If any one has removed this piece without breaking it please advise on how it was done. Does it just snap in / out? Please feel free to include any "don't do it this way"'s. Thanks in advance.
Russ
Yes that is where the 4x4 ESOF switch goes, and it does pop out. You have to remove the big dash piece and reach behind to relast the 4 tabs that hold it in place. Put the key in and turn it to unlock (one position clockwise from lock, before the accessory position). Engage the parking brake and shift the vehicle into 1st gear (if an automatic). Tilt the steering wheel all the way down if you have tilt steering. Grab the dash panel right above the gauges and pull toward the back of the truck. The panel should pull right off. Work your way toward the passenger side to unhook all the clips. You can then either reach behind and undo all the electrical connectors so you can remove the whole dash, or just look behind and try to find the clips to remove the small insert you are wanting to take out.
That sounds like a little more work than I had hoped, I didn't realize I would have to pull the dash.
If I were to buy the new trim piece could I just snap it into place or does it have to be fastened from the back?
If it snaps in I could get a new one and modify it for the xm mount. and then cut the old one out.
The price of the piece may be cheaper than the headache and if I remove the dash I will surely have some cussin and a few new rattles. I have been there before.
thanks
The dash is actually really simple to get out. What I wrote down may seem complicated but I promise if you go out and try it, it only takes about 5 minutes if that. I took the dash out of my 99 about 10 times, and have taken the dash out of my 07 about 6 times so far and I haven't had any rattles, and I haven't broken anything.
the dash takes literally 20 seconds to pull of. i don't have to worry about the shifter since i have a manual transmission, but still should be less than a minute to remove. i have installed a radar, gps, satellite radio, cell phone holder, and swapped out the original head unit. all of which i removed the upper dash panel to do, so i could hardwire everything and conceal the wiring too. you can mount the satellite radio on the little piece you spoke of, or anywhere on that dash panel. i have a 4x4 so i couldn't use that piece. take your time and do a nice clean install. you'll have no problems with that dash.
Yeah, I can get it done real quick now too Mastercaster. But I figured for his first time he's probably going to be a little timid, and real careful about it, so I estimated a little high.
i here ya beerstalker... it definetly takes a little longer the first time. i suppose i was doing the opposite of you and estimating a little low. he sounded as though he was shying away from doing it, and i just wanted to reinforce how easy it really is. i think sometimes people believe you have to remove the whole dashboard instead of just that one trim panel. at least judging by how reserved some seem to be.
Just like the other guys said Russ. E-Z! Just pull firmly and slowly and unhoock each harness patiently. Beerstalkers directions are exact. Good luck and don't sweat it. I've taken apart same way numerous times not rattling issues what so ever.
Just brought this one back to show my appreciation for the excellent dash removal info. Thanks to this, my son and I swapped my AM-FM for an oem AM-FM-CD in under 20 minutes.
