Auto Locking Hub Problems

I have a 2000 Excursion and when I go into 4X4 it is not engaging the frount wheels. When I get out an manualy lock the hubs then I get 4X4.

So do I need to replace the hubs?
If so should I use something other than the factory part to get better preformance or strength?

Thanks

I agree the vacuum system is propbably having some sort of problem. Fairly common im sure if you check out the search feature youd find lots of good info. I havent had the problem yet though so i cant give any firsthand advice.

Several people have already mentioned a vacuum problem. One symptom of this is that the air flow dampers don't work correctly, expecially when the engine is under load.

If you set the air to come out of the vents and step on the pedal, the airflow may switch to the defrost. This is because the dampers are manipulated by vacuum and the vacuum presure drops when the engine revs.

This was the symptom I had. If it is a vacuum leak, do the easy stuff first. Check the lines that run to the hubs since they are exposed to road hazards. There is a vacuum control solenoid for the hubs under the hood that can go bad. This was my problem, but I don't know exactly where it was - the dealer found and fixed it. But they first ripped apart the dash looking for a leak in the damper control system. Poor choice! Check the easy stuff first.

The tech told me that under load, the vacuum drops to about 2 psi - if I recall correctly. So if there is a leak, there isn't much room before things stop working.

Hope this helps
