V-10 Pluses and Minuses..

Hi All!
Giving serious consideration to buying a very cherry 1999 F250 SD XLT with ALL the goodies. On the surface, I love the vehicle, but I know NOTHING about the V-10. Would like your thoughts on this - both good and bad.
I currently have a '90 F250 Lariat with the 460, so (obviously) ANY gas mileage would be an improvement!
what kind of HP and torque will this V-10 deliver?

Big Ol' Truck

V-10 Pluses and Minuses..

The 98 & 99 V-10's in the pick-ups had 275 HP and 405 ft lbs of torque. In 2000 Ford changed the head design and the manifold to bump the HP and torque to 310 and 425. I have the 98 V-10 in my E-350 and due to the air intake system it's rated @265 HP. But, my V-10 is a rocket for some reason. My brother in law has a 2000, a 2001 and a 2002 V-10 in his 4WD F-250/F-350's. I've driven all of them since I have to help him out once in awhile with his electrical contracting business. I would put my V-10 up against any of his V-10's, and surely I could whip him 0-60 MPH and beyond. This is just based on 'seat-of-the-pants' feel but I'm sure I'm right. Any of the V-10's will give you many happy miles. My previous van was a 5.0 liter and it actually got worse MPG than my V-10. I think it's because I had to work that poor little 302 so hard just to get it moving. I've had as high as 15 MPG and as low as 7 towing my 24' camp trailer through the mountains. Other than some reports of spark plugs blowing out due to improper torque from the factory, I've heard no horror stories from V-10 owners. I love miine, it's very torquey, which surprised me initially since it's an OHC engine design. I expected not much down low in the RPM range, but was definitely surprised after I drove it. Besides good low RPM torque, the V-10 is a willing revver, and makes great HP (and great sounds) when you put 'the pedal to the metal'. I've surprised many guys in their 4 cylinders and even a guy and gal in their V-6 Camaro ! You're in for a treat should you decide to go w/the V-10. Good luck ! Let us know what you think if you decide to come to the side of us V-10 owners.

Ken, 1998 E-350 XLT ClubWagon, V-10, E4OD, 3:73.1, 15 passenger.

2001 F250 Super Crew. Ken said it better than I could. 15 mpg on the hwy 10-12 in town depends how hard you want to drive and 7 8 pulling 26' 5th wheel.
If the head changes were like the mustang don't worry about the few ponies they only come on top so ken you seat may be right.

V-10 Pluses and Minuses..

The engine specs were covered, so I'd like to offer some input on driving the V10 and comparing it to your 460. A lot of guys go for a test drive and never take the engine into the "sweet spot". Thus, they think the V10 is lacking in power. Here's my 2 cents:

First, I'd like to say that the best economy comes if you keep the truck under 2000 RPMs. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of power at that engine speed so choose the differential gear ratio(s) accordingly.

Remember that the V10 is an OHC design- it's OK to rev the engine to 5200 RPM (the shift point for one with an auto tranny). Peak torque comes around 3300 RPM and peak HP comes around 4200 RPM. This is probably a lot higher RPM than you are used to running, but the V10 likes it... and was made for it. So just get in and "drop the hammer" for a REAL taste of the power. I think you'll be please with the results.

V-10 Pluses and Minuses..

I've been driving nearly the same truck for a month now, '99 F250 SB Lariat w/ 4.30's. It replaced a 460/C6/4/10 combo, (although on a E350 van), and for me the difference is the width of the power range. High teens, (RPM), into the high 4000's and it just keeps pulling. The 460 wanted to work in 2nd at a higher RPM.

Part of this is attributable to the low gears but I don't have the "tranny search" thing going on with the V10 like I did with the 460. If you are towing and want to go gas, it's a hard combo to beat.

A lot of the guys here have much better mileage than me, all around 10mph average, although my last two tanks of Shell 82 octane seem to have moved me up into the 11 mpg range. This is just about what I was getting with the van although frankly, I bought the durn thing to tow and didn't expect much in the way of fuel efficiency.

Great truck, best I've ever owned, comfortable, looks great, and pulls HARD. Good luck, hope this helps a bit.

Got to agree with the rev it comment. Engine builds more power
all across the power band if you rev it enough to loosen it up.
Mine pulls better every trip I take. I run it wot up to the shift
point routinely.

Gas mileage - 10 mpg would be a joy. 4.60 gears and mileage are
mutually exclusive.

Everyone is right about the V10 willing to rev. 3000 rpms and up it really runs. One thing to watch out for on the 99's is some models made before April 99 may have piston slap issues. (piston slap is a cold start knock/clatter which lasts a few minutes) Check the date on the door jam sticker. If it's before April then try and get to the truck early and start it cold. Other wise you should be OK.

Didn't the '99 SD V-10 have tranny cooling problems as well?? I thought there was a TSB for cooler mods.

It is 31 feet long, just an inch or so wider than the std
dualie tires on either side (16" normal truck tires and rims -
but load range E). About 11 feet or so tall at the air
conditioner. 12050 lbs from the factory without gas, water in
tanks, gear, people...etc.

Yeah - the weight probably has some minimal effect on mileage too...
