Hey hey. This one is mainly just to talk. My dad asked the guy at Advanced Autoparts how much another 300 longblock would cost. To my surprise it was only about 1,100 dollars. Isn't that cheap?? Maybe I'm missing something here. I understand none of these motors are new anymore, they're all rebuilt, but still.
Also here's a serious question. My truck has been running warmer than I'd like. Would putting in a different kind of oil help? I'm not sure what to do to keep it cooler. I can understand it being warm in 110F heat with 100% humidity, but it's still acting up.
I DO NOT recommened buying an engine from advanced auto. That is cheap and theres a reason for it, yes some of them are good, but alot are bad and there customer support is horrible. A buddy of mine bought a complete 383 stroker for a chevelle, it has been back and fourth 3 or 4 times for bad heads, bad gaskets, burned pistons, to this day it still burns coolant. He got a check for 250 dollars in the end.
sorry for the long post but i dont support there engine program. If your truck is over heating there must be a reason. check your coolant number 1. check it's level and mixture, anti freeze is a insulator, to much anti freeze will cause the engine to run hot. check to make sure that your fan is engaging and there's no broken fins. blow out your radiator very good with air and then wash it down with water, this is also a common cause of an engine running hot, not enough air flow thru it. there could be several reasons on top of these. good luck and repost what happens.
yeah you talking about those recon engines? stay far far away from those things. I had a buddy that worked at advance say how crappy they was and that a lot of them would could back to get replacements but yeah they were good about giving you another motor but who wants to go through the hassle of swapping it back out again.
put a bottle of the redline water wetter in mine and it made a big difference when towing. I was about ready to buy a bigger radiator but stumbled across it over at advance.
One of the better brands of remaned engines is Jasper(R) brand.Or at least used to be.Oh, and on the Advance engines.Run do not walk away from them. They are fit only for a mooring buoy anchor.

I bought a recon engine once. It was the worst money I ever spent. I spent over two thousand dollrs putting in the engine and things that go in with an engine, and then took it to all the old mechanics in town when it wtill wouldn't run right. The mileage sucked and it used oil somethign fierce. Recon said I installed it wrong, then they told me the block I had was sold to someone about 2000 miles away about 5 years before, and thus wasn't under warranty. I finally sold the truck for $500 in a fit of rage one day and never regretted that decision nearly as much as buying that damn engine.
Autozone sucks something fierce. I went to buy a rebuilt m50d and when I got home I took the drain plug out and it was black and covered in metal shavings. I took it back cause 1 that tranny uses autofluid and it had more metal shavings than my old tranny did. They ordered another one from a different place and I went in and that one was worse than the one I turned in the first time.
Thanks for the heads up. So, go with Jasper? What's the website? How much would I pay for a 300 EFI?
I'll be the first to say it, i wouldn't buy a rebuilt 300 from anyone. Bill, go to your local junk yard or ebay and get an engine to rebuild yourself. I have found engines right out of F-150 that still run for $75 on ebay. Local guy here will magna flux the head for ~$70. There are new heads on the net for anywhere between $600 -$1500. Still you could find a good engine to rebuild pretty cheap, rebuild it yourself and learn all about that process.
That's what i'd do, of course i don't trust anyone when it comes to monkeying with vehicles. I bought my truck because it was a one owner who didn't screw with any of the original equipment. I don't even bother with jacked up, bored over, swapped out trucks. Just my $.02... Get a oldy but a goody and rebuild it yourself...
Theres At Least 10 Trucks At My Local Scrapyard That Have Complete 300's In Them. Managed To Get An Old Carburated One To Fire Up And Ran Awesome. Theres Also A Truck That Had The Head Taken Off But The Cylinder Are Trashed. The Only Way That One Would Be Any Good Is If You Do A Resleve On It.
Hey Bill; I would check your timing also. Retarded (late) timing can cause overheating problems. Do you have a fan shroud? Also, I pulled my water pump today on my 300 and I took a look inside and it was full of sediment. It was a wonder that anything could flow through it at all. I imagine something like that could contribute to your problem as well.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't not see that this post started in 2007.
Nothing like a thread from the dead..... Since the original poster still comes here, I'll add to this. What kind of gauge were you using to determine that it was running warm? I hope not the stock idiot gauge, because those have to be the most unreliable gauge clusters ever. Any time you're dealing with an issue dealing with readings from an instrument, install a mechanical gauge. Even if its one of the cheap 15 dollar Autozone ones, it's better than a stock Ford gauge.
