Suggestions to help diagnose a problem

I have a '99 F150 5.4 with 165K on it that probably has not been driven 50 miles in the last month. I had noticed a light exhaust tick when I did drive it. A couple of days ago, I had to take it on a high speed trip of about 300-350 miles. As usual, the tick there but as I went, it got progressively louder. I know the exhaust manifold bolts are crustly but I don't see any signs of soot around them yet. I am concerned that I have a loose spark plug. I am trying to find where the noise is coming from but with the hood up and the engine running, I can't. Any suggestions. Thanks.

A broken stud on the exhaust manifold is a clear indication that it's leaking. Since it's getting louder I also would suspect a loose plug. If those are the stock plugs you are due for replacements.

If you blew a spark plug look at the coil packs (especially #3) and see if any of them are "jumping".

I would guess that the ticking getting louder is the exhaust leak getting worse. It could be leaking enough that it has begun to etch the cylinder head along the path of the leak. I would suggest getting the exhaust manifold studs replaced as soon as possible. Good luck!
