My friends B3000 was cutting out from time to time while driving. He was always able to keep going or restart the truck, now nothing will re-start it. Truck has about 140k on the clock?? Does this sound like a bad fuel filter or bad fuel pump? For the pump sounds like from my search taking the the bed off is easiest?? The fuel filter is under the driver frame rail in the truck correct. Is this a common problem for the B3000/Ranger? I guess if I can hear the fuel pump and bang on the filter and get it going that is good. If I can't hear the pump sounds like I will have to help him rip it out of the tank.
Might be helpful if we knew which year B3000 it is.
Well could be a fuel, or fire problem, so begin with the basics & start with scanning the computer for set, or pending trouble codes, as they could offer up good clues.
Also check fuses & power relays to the computer & fuel pump.
If all that checks ok, then do a fuel pressure check at the fuel rail & do a spark check with a inductive type timng light.
If he's past due for a fuel filter change, do it, as a clogged filter makes the pump have to work harder.
How old is the battery & does it pass load testing????

Can't get it to shop in rural area now and will only start and run for 10 mins now.
Also check fuses & power relays to the computer & fuel pump.
Would not hear the pump or be able to start it if fuse blown?

Doing it today, geting metal tool and filter

The $6 filter fixed it but not for awhile. I replaced it and drained the old filter and chunks of rust and dirt came out of the filter. It was the orginal filter from 140k!! Man that filter is bitch to get at!! But after all the air was purged out of the lines the truck started and ran GREAT!!
Well ran three days no problem then hesitated and stalled on him. He tried re start no dice. Then let it sit for 10 min, and it re started an dhe drove it home. Now will not restart at all. Is it the fuel pump for sure now??
You say it won't start, do you mean the starter motor won't crank the engine, or that the engine turns over/cranks ok, at normal speed, but just won't fire & run????
If it cranks ok, but won't fire & run, make sure the fuel pump is running & is supplying the correct fuel pessure, with a fuel pressure gage attached to the fuel rail fitting.
If fuel pressure checks ok, make sure you have spark.
Edit: Do you have a "check engine" trouble light lit????
If so scan the computer for trouble codes & list ALL the codes you find & the order in which they were retrieved.
Let us know what you find.

Starter works great and spin fine just no firing. The fuel pump runs some times and some times not. NO CEL is on in the cluster, it starts some times some times not?
Do you think a in tank fuel pump out of a '92 Ford Ranger Ext. cab 4WD 4.0L will work in the '94 Mazda B3000 Ext-cab 2wd???

Well droped the assembly sender and pump out of the '92 Ranger in and it works like a charm. But MAN are the metal lines coming out of the old assembly rusted out!! Guys might want to check them up North. The old one crumbled in my hand!!
Put gas line dryer in at every oil change in all parts of the country if you run around below full condensation builds up inside the tank and starts rusting things and your motor starts pulling water in and causing all kinds of injector trouble! Did you clean the tank out you probably have fine scale rust sitting on the bottom from the top of the tank, It can get past the filter and eat up the fuel pump internals leading to dropping pressure overtime. $1.00 for gas line dryer can save some headaches down the road!
