Folks,
The other day i noticed my ATF level had slowly increased on my dipstick. I have an F250 7.3L with 4R100 tranny. After i run the truck for just a short drive the level returns to normal level for "cold" but when i leave the truck sitting in my garage for a couple of weeks it rises slowly to max level for "hot". Anyone seen this? Is it a problem? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jim
It's the torque converter slowly draining back into the pan. Some do it, some don't. There is a check valve that is supposed to prevent this, sometimes they leak a bit. It sounds like yours isn't leaking a lot, so if you don't mind the couple seconds it takes to refill the converter after sitting for a while it won't hurt anything.
I have seen them where the truck won't move for about 15 seconds after sitting for a day or two. That is a check valve that leaks a lot, and the torque converter drains down to the center.
Thats why they tell you to check the ATF when the tranny is warm and idling, so the TC is full. When I had a C6 in my truck, it wouldn't leak a drop when it was running, but if it sat for a couple days, the TC would drain into the case and fill it to a point where it could leak.
