For the longest time I have admired the sound of a diesel. I always wanted to have a nice loud diesel that I could hear it and everyone else could too. Now I have been reading a bunch of posts and people are always mentioning a lot about doing things to quiet the engine. I was wondering why we seem to be striving to quiet down our beautiful mean sounding diesels.
They will never be quiet. I know that I think mine sounds so much better without the fuel related cackle. Man that sounded like crap. I look a smooth sounding diesel clatter and let the exhaust do the talking. Despite all of this, nobody will ever mistake mine for a gasser.
I actually was able to hear some new injector noises once I reduced my cackle. Not a bad thing.
You want loud, wait until Jan-Feb and go crank that baby up in single digit temps. My mother thought my engine was going to puke on the spot when she heard that in NH some time ago. She just shook her head to my "sounds beautiful doesn't it" comment.
Besides, the wife isn't always impressed when I crank it up at O-dark thirty and let it warm in F-16 jet mode before hunting. Come to think of it, after 21 years, I don't think I do much of anything to impress her anymore.
Tenn ,lol, you are right, my whole family knows when I leave for work. I might let them know a little on the noisy side.
AKusp A guy came to my store with a new DODGE and I went out and came back in and told him how quite it was. Told him it does not sound like a diesel. He knew what I was talking about.
The Cummins 12v are loud because of the mechanical fuel knock..A compression ignition engine is going to be somewhat loud, a large displacement engine is going to be loud, a truck engine is going to be loud.
There is hardly any emphasis on making a diesel truck quiet(until recently)..However, Cat when designing the fuel system for our truck did try to address the noise of a diesel when they had the HEUI system in mind..FE, Emissions, quiet operation were all in serious consideration.
That said, Usually if you can decrease the noise level of a diesel, you are usually doing the engine some good, longevity wise.
So when you here about the fuel mods reducing noise its because they are seperating the air from the fuel. Besides quieting the engine, it is making the injectors last a lot longer.
Fuel starvation also makes the engines noisy.. As well as too much Timing..(thats why you dont want CHEAP programming).

The newer diesels inject 5 to 6 pulses of fuel to lower combustion temps for reduced NOX emissions, and when one passes within a few feet of my trailer I can't even hear an engine, just the sound of the tires in the gravel road! On the other hand, that quietness comes with reduced MPG and other emissions related complications as well.
On the subject of quietness implying longevity, I'm a little concerned that chips in general and a DP in particular aren't conducive to the best longevity, because they inject the biggest slug of fuel in the shortest amount of time to get the biggest bang for the best efficiency and HP output. I know my DP sounds louder (and meaner), and Jody stressed to never start up in cold weather in one of his tunes.
When i do something to my truck such as one of the fuel mods, i do it to make my engine run smoother and stronger, not quieter. I don't like a quiet engine after listening to my engine. However a mechanical cummins engine, they NEED to be quieted down because they are obnoxiously loud.
Driving around inside my truck it's not loud unless i'm on it and the back windows are down. However i leave uphill from my girlfriends house a good 1/4 mile 4-5% grade and sometimes i like to get into it near the top, and she says she can still hear the whistle and the exhaust rumble as i go over the top. But she loves it, that's another reason why i love her
Quiet? Not necessary unless it's removing the noise associated with less than ideal performance, like Tenn said. Other than that, being able to quiet a diesel is about the only way I've been able to convince my wife to let me sell my V10 Excursion and replace with one that has the 7.3 in it (well, gas mileage is another consideration, too).
Other than that, I want exactly what Kris is talking about... smoother and stronger.
Wonder why he offers the PCM tunes then? Not complaining! I love his product, just a conflicting argument there.
Well he encourages people to get the stock tune and warm the engine up using it during the winter months before switching to one of his. When I was there, he told me a story about a customer that called him to listen to his strange engine noises over the phone. It was dead winter where the customer was, and he'd started up in the 120 setting, and was revving the engine to help get it warm so he could leave for work, and it was making all kinds of terrible noises.
I WILL NEVER OWN A QUIET DIESEL!!!!!!!!!!!!! A diesel is supposed to be loud, smelly, ignorant, and scare little kids (and certian nerdy white-collar types as well). I love starting my truck in a parking lot and watching peoples heads turn. Or when a little kid is walking with there mom and they hear my truck fire up and you can almost read there lips "Mommy what is that, is it a monster?" as they hold on to her for dear life. The best one is when I had my old CTD when you would start it up it would give the slightest puff of coal. If there was somebody going to there car walking by my tailpipe I would wait for the right moment and fire it up so they would get the blast of coal in the face. I guess I was an *** when I was younger!

DALE, you just said what I think all of us Diesel owners feel, we like our trucks LOUD !!!!
I haven't met her actual "dad" yet, but after the move into the new house about a month ago, the new "friend" of her mom's started coming over more and the first time i met him, i quote "Wow what do you got done to that thing, i heard the whistle coming up the driveway and i know that's not stock"
And her mom loves it, she wants a ride but i dont want to scare her.
