well put the new injector pump and injectors in today, started up nice, ran great smooth all that went down the road no problems, drove about 25 miles.shut off the truck at the son and laws house went out about 10 min later would not start, turns over great will not light off.same problem i had with the old pump.any ideas as this getting expensive.
few notes if they help:
with the old pump if i had to start the truck before the motor had set for about 5 hrs at the least,i could pour warm water over the injectror pump and most times it would start right up.
after setting for a few hours started up on the first few reves.
i have not tried the water trick on this new pump really dont want as its only been in a few hours.
i will try starting the truck in the morning to see how it starts cold. thanks any help would be great.
This is a classic air problem, and it sounds to me like it's on the topside by one of the filters, if not the filter itself. New IP you say, so barring bad luck the problem isn't in the pump. That leaves the return lines and everything from the tank forward in question. I'd consider putting on new lines and "O" rings, maybe even a new filter housing and lines. It's time to isolate each piece, do a vacuum test and knock this thing in the head.
There are also rubber rings under the nuts on the main solid fuel line from the filter housing to the center inlet fitting on the IP, make sure they are in good shape. Most likely as mentioned already, good connections on the return line system, hoses all making good positive connection and not loading up the caps in any particular way!
well this morning after setting all night started up on the first couple reves of the starter and ran fine till i shut it off, dose not sound like air intrusion dose it?
well ive been waiting a week for the replacement pump to replace the new rebuilt i put in last week, installed it and still have same trouble i am about to give up and get something else. it will start every time right away and run all day if you dont shut it off, but once you shut it off you have to wait till the engine cools down to restart. as of right now i start it go to work it starts after setting 9 hours drive home shut off till the next morning.which is fine as long as i never want to stop somewhere.
You say rebuild or reman. wondering if rebuild they didn't completely repair the unit. I've always went with a remanufactured unit from IH. Never a problem.
One would begin to wonder about things after the same problem is occuring with 3 differnent IP's. I would suggest that you do a compression check of the engine when its hot. It may be when cold the oil on the cylinder walls is thick enough to give satisfactory compression, but things change when they get hot. Not a happy thought, but its what comes to my mind with your problem description. Good luck
bobpat204..............on your next trip driving the truck (when returning home would be best)..........as quick as possible after turning the engine off........go and remove the fuel tank cap..........listen for a "rush" of air into the tank..............if you do hear air movement, then find the fuel tank vent and clean it out (some tanks are vented thru the cap).............if you do not hear anything, still leave the cap off and wait the typical time for No start and see if it will start..................
If still No start,.......... Disconnect the wire going to the fuel cut off solenoid....................then go to the fuel filter housing air bleed and while cranking the engine, bleed a lot of fuel off until fuel will come out with good pressure and volume ..........connect fuel cut off solenoid and try starting engine...................
If still No start, then note the static timing marks on the IP housing and the IP.....................(hot engine) rotate the IP towards the passenger side(advancing) about 1/8 to 3/16 inch ......................(with both the fast idle and advance solenoid disconnected)...........start it up.............
If No start, then use the jumper wire directly to the advance solenoid......................it really should fire off for sure here (hot)...........if it does start up here...................advance the timing mark about 3/32 inch and lock it down there....................remove jumper wire and connect everything back up.................give it a try for a few days..........................
