I have the 7.3l PSD in my 01 F-250. When I fill up with fuel the gas gauge won't register as full until I restart the truck. If I drive for about an hour it eventually will show about half full if I dont shut it off. Any theories?
Yes, Ford made it so the gas gauge can only move by a certain amount over time while the vehicle is running. Otherwise any time you went up or down a hill your gas gauge reading would change. If you drive long enough it will eventually come all the way up. I think Ford eventually realized that many diesel owners fuel up with the vehicle running, so they figured out a way to allow it to register faster when refueling. When I fuel up my 07 I can sit in the cab and watch the gauge raise.

Yea I think that when they changed things in 02' the fuel gauge was one of them. I will have to ask my dad about his 01' because we run transfer tanks with 12 volt pumps and fill going down the road.

I have a 03 6.0L F450 that did the slow thing until the fuel sending unit finally went out completely.
BTW Ford updated the sending unit and the new one fits several models now.
don't mean to "hijack" this thread, but i am from so-cal and no one fills up with their vehicles running. i thought mainly just because of safety reasons, but i don't really know if it is dangerous or not. secondly it never gets so hot or cold we want to leave it running to be cool or warm when we get back in.
so now that i just moved to maine will i see more people filling up with their vehicles running in the winter? is this at all dangerous?

I have never thought it was dangerous to do that or talk on a cell phone when filling. About a year or two ago Mythbusters did an epsoide on just this subject, and proved both theing cannot happen.
I think it is certainly not an issue with a diesel bc there is not really an ignition source. If you had a turbo timer on it would probably never shut off before you got back in the truck. Plus, it is the cool super trucker thing to do.
It is not a big deal to leave a diesel vehicle running while fueling up. A gas powered vehicle is a bit more dangerous because the fuel is so much more reactive. I usually shut down gas powered vehicles, but leave my truck running (if it's really cold or really hot out).
