No, the brandmotion option is not portable. My buddy had one installed in his truck and it works pretty good. Having a portable solution in my opinion is better simply because you can do more with it. The only down side to the protable is mounting it in your truck. Another friend of mine refered me to this model as a good "starter" unit:
BTW, my buddy paid ~$1500 installed for the brandmotion at the dealership in the DFW area. You may be able to buy it and install it yourself - I don't think it's that difficult.
What portable GPS would be good in my pickup? Don't need anything fancy.
I have a Garmin GPSMap 60cx that I use on my ATV I do use it in my truck now and then as well.. but currently don't have it mounted. Don't bother with the 60csx, the "s" feature is border line useless IMHO.
I heard that the little round coin holder can pop out and you can place a mounting ball in that location. I haven't had the need to do that yet as I have a pretty good sense of direction and don't mind using a map if needed. The Garmin unit will cost you about $300 plus another $100 for the road maps and a good mount (I recommend RAM mounts) will be another $50 or so, then you should get the dc power cord that plugs into the 12v outlet. which I personally would get on EBAY as it will be ~$15 with shipping as opposed to the $25 they want for the Garmin branded one.
So for about $500 you have a sweet portable(handheld) GPS unit you can use in the car, atv, boat, bicycle, snowmobile, hiking etc..
I have a Magellian eXplorist 500 XL that I picked up for under $200 brand new. You have to buy the maps (I think the US Maps came as a deal for another $20 when you bought the unit, but the Canadian Maps cost me another $100)
It is a small hand held unit with a color screen that I use when hiking and on my dirt bike, as it give you waypoints to track you're trip in and then you can backtrack back out again. Plus it gives elevation, distance traveled, speed and a lot of other stuff.
Still learning to use the thing, but it seems like a decent unit for the price.
I rented a Garmin when I was in California and the thing I hated about it was that it always defaulted to the shortest distance, even when this included taking a ferry across a canel when there was a roadway around that took half the time as the ferry. Minor, but anoying...
Someone started with the garmin brand but held back I guess...I have one of their 2610 models that use a cf card for memory..... can be had from EBay for about $200 or so.....If you can get a complete kit it has a base that will sit atop the dash and the darned thing will tell you where to turn....sort of neat....I also have one of the quest models but the screen is small for my old eyes.....check out the 2610....

I use a Lowrance H2O unit in my F-150 and in the boat. It has been a real good unit. If you get one, be sure to get the Mapcreate package with it, it has an unbelievable amount of information on it.
The Garmin Nuvi 350 can be had for about $350 if you watch for sales on the net. It can be used portable. For a handheld type GPS I just bought a Garmin GPSMap 60 Csx for $321 shipped before the $50 Garmin rebate which is good until December. Be aware that detailed city maps and topo maps are not included and will have to be purchased seperately for most hand held GPS receivers.
