Cold air makes more power than hot air. From your description I'm guessing your intake system isn't piped all the way to the grill. That cone filter is more in likely pulling in hot air from around the engine if I'm reading it right. If you find the time you might install a temp guage in the intake piping to see what kind of air you are pulling in. If need be you can adjust it to find the coolest spot.

Or just build a heat shield and build it so that it will force cooler air from the grill, just take some thin sheet metal and cut a notch for the pipe, and bent it to fit and clear the pulleys and stuff.

Bone, I had the same problem with my 6.9 N/A with dual air intake & dual 3 inch exhaust?!!
From all the info I have read, you can't have high EGT's without fuel....my pump was not turned up but I had high oil consumption.
I'm not suggesting that it's the same for you but without an intercooler or water injection, the only way to keep the EGT's down is your right foot.

Question

Good morning,
I have a 1989 F350 4x2 w/7.3L N/A IDI. I've done quite a bit of reading on cold air intakes for the engine and was wondering if anyone has come up with a way to get positive pressure into the intake without modifing the grill, headlights, or sheet metal on the front of the truck...I'm thinking there has to be a way to keep near-stock appearance whilst enjoying the benefits of ram air. Any input is appriciated.

I have a bolt on hood scoop that I won't to make into a functional ram-air hood, but how do I keep the water out of the intake when it rains?

I have a positve pressure cold air system that only involved cutting plastic out of the grill, fabricating a difflector from behind the grill, up behind the headlight to a big mother fiberglass scoop. I have measured 3 times the ram air pressure in the back of that scoop compaired to the stock scoop at 55 mph. Click on my gallery for pictures and more how to details.

I cut a 4inch hole in the firewall above/beside the mastercylinder and ran 4in aluminum dryer duct to the factory air box. Gained 1psi boost and EGTs dont rise near as fast. The hole is about 1inch off the floor of the cowl so water wont get in, I've had this setup for almost 2 years and have never found water in the air ducts or air box. Id post a pic, but I havent figured that out yet, maybe I'll try later tonight.

You need some way to get outside air into the motor. I ran a temp test and the air under the hood at the intake(pre-filter)was 140* at 60mph when it was only 70* outside. I have a cowl intake and it dropped the intake temp to about 80*. The temp probe was inside the airbox. Here is the cowl intake made by hypermax.

Psychodude, what was the temp number with the factory intake? Also how is your factory intake ducting routed? I seem to recall mine being over the battery at one point, now I have the 6.9-style ducting that goes under the battery and draws from behind the grille through a large opening in the firewall that was there from the factory, so it's a true cold-air intake.

The factory intake tubing that john so kindly posted a pic of is identical to mine that I tested. The hyper max was 80*moving/105* idle vs the factory tube which was 82*moving/126*idle.
