My buddy has a 88 F250 with a 351 and has 2.25 straight exhaust pipes on it. At our local truck pull, A old man told us that would burn valve's is this true?
Potentially... on an engine that cannot correct air mixture for an increase in air flow through the motor.. such as a carb'd motor. An EFI motor has no such problem however.
The main reason for burnt valves would either be a lean condition causing extremely high cylinder temps or an exhaust leak at the head. During deceleration, cool air can be drawn back into the cylinder and when cool air hits the hot valve, it cracks. But straight pipes with no exhaust leaks then it will not hurt anything, just sound annoying and crackle alot thru the pipes. I prefer the sound of a good muffler over straight pipes personally.
