Would like to straight pipe my F-350 using the existing exhaust by cutting out the muffler and replacing it with a straight section of pipe welded in its place. Will this work? and has anyone done this? I'd like to try it out before I spend time and money on the 5" straight pipe set up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sounds great is very subjective. If you like a harsh, grating, annoying drone go for it. Cutting the cat out is what cleans up the whistle pitch and lets you hear the turbo.
When I bought mine it came with a 5" straight pipe. I really didn't like it. It had too much drone in the low end, and too loud top end. Maybe the stock 3 1/2" sounds better.
I kept the 5" pipe and put a muffler on it. Much better.

Just checking but, you don't live in the peoples Republic of California do you? If so, you can not take the cat or muffler off otherwise, you will not pass the smog check.

Many people just keep the cat and put it on for an inspection and then it comes right back off. However, there is always the chance that a State Trooper could ticket you. Ya never know.

Kittys are a federal requirement, not just California. LEO's can and will check....any officer in any state can check. Heard the fine is $10,000 but not sure exactly.
Need to keep it on and gut it out...they won't rod the kitty! It is also tapered at both ends so you can cut appropriately and weld a 4" to both ends.
I was thinking of gutting my cat. Is it as simple as removing the cat and beating the guts out with a crow bar?
I ran an S10 with a SB chevy without a cat and straight piped years ago. I was pulled over by a state trooper and he asked me to turn my truck off. It was too loud. Then he gave me a warning for speeding because he liked my truck. Stood there and asked me all sorts of questions...and I was on my way.
I have been around a lot of cars that had no muffler, no cat etc. I only say that because I have NEVER heard of anyone getting a ticket for a missing cat. That's not to say it NEVER happens, which is way I said that 'you never know'. I wouldn't hollow it out if it were me. I would remove it and insert a straight pipe (a cat delete kit). That way, if you DO somehow become the first person that I have ever heard of ticketed, you can put it back on. If you hollow it out, there's no going back if they give you a fix 'er or else ticket!
